Meet Patricia Gervasi of Gervasi & Company in Quincy and Wollaston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Gervasi.

Patricia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As early as eighth grade, I knew that I wanted to be involved in the beauty industry. I started as a model when I was younger, but soon realized that I was better suited for the behind-the-scenes aspect in working with hair. In high school, I took cosmetology courses, and once I graduated, at age 19 I was working in a barbershop, taking haircuts for as little as $3. From there, I was able to hone my skills as a stylist, refining my techniques in both cutting and color until I took my first full-time stylist position in Boston at age 20.

I spent 14 years working as a stylist in the city, further developing my skills as a stylist, but always feeling as though there was more I could be doing to further myself as both a stylist and businesswoman. I hit my stride and began working on-site for weddings and events, while renting a chair to cater to my day-to-day clients. From here, I noticed that my desire to grow and expand wasn’t necessarily being met by my employers. I started working with Matrix color and products about 5 years ago, and quickly moved towards becoming an educator for the company. It was a logical step to take, seeing as I not only loved the products and color lines that Matrix had to offer, but also because I was still seeking avenues to continue my education and grow my personal business.

As time went on and I began to feel more stifled creatively, I came to the decision that the next logical step for myself was to open my own salon, to better cater to my clients and meet their needs. I began that process and held the grand opening for Gervasi & Company in May of 2015. We have been servicing the wonderful people of Quincy, Milton, and surrounding areas ever since, and have slowly but surely become a staple in the community for those who seek a high-end hair and makeup experience.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
From the beginning of my time as a stylist, I have always found myself wanting to expand and grow and push my boundaries. Working up from the bottom was a challenge, especially when I found myself needing to relocate due to having children and settling down.

Another struggle that I’ve found myself facing is continuing education on the business end of things – while I’ve been able to educate myself through experiences as a stylist for 25 years, owning my own business is a new experience that faces its own struggles.

With these learning curves, as well as others that any stylist or business owner would face, I’ve tried to handle it with grace, patience, and an open mind – I believe that these three components are hugely important with any struggle one could face.

So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Gervasi & Company story. Tell us more about the business.
Gervasi & Company Hair Salon has been a staple in the South Shore community since we first opened in May of 2015. We specialize in all types of services – precision cutting, kid’s cuts, root retouch, balayage, ombre, traditional highlighting, color correction, updos, make-up, and general styling for all hair types. As a company, we pride ourselves on constant continuing education to stay up-to-date on the latest tricks and trends to better serve our guests. With Patricia at the helm as a Matrix educator, we can keep up with all the modern cutting and coloring techniques, as well as honing our skills in all other areas. All members of our team are committed to fostering deep and long-lasting relationships with our guests and our community, and we believe that these relationships set us apart from other salons in our area.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
In my life and business, I’ve been lucky enough to learn the lesson of hard work, and how hard work can take you as far as you want it to. I am not one to leave things to chance or luck; I would rather work towards a goal and be grateful for the small lucky moments that happen along the way. If anything, I have been lucky to work in amazing community, and have been lucky to work with an amazing team of stylists through the journey of owning my own salon.
