Meet Patricia Coombs of Uncommon Yarn in Brookline

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Coombs.

Patricia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’d been a stay at home Mom for 20+ years and had gone back to school for fashion design. Going back to design school gave me a feeling of confidence and a willingness to take risks. I’d been a “maker” since I was a child, sewing, crafting and knitting. I love textiles and “making” a fabric. Knitting is essentially the making of fabric, and knitting became my favorite pastime. Initially I thought of opening a women’s boutique of some sort, but there wasn’t enough enthusiasm to get such a venture off the ground. I began to think more and more that a knitting store was the kind of venture I could really be excited about. I kept driving by a vacant space on Beacon Street in Brookline and thinking “That’s a great spot for a knitting store!” I took the plunge last September and opened up Uncommon Yarn. I’ve learned a lot during this process and really enjoy running Uncommon Yarn.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As with any new business we have had bumps along the way. I didn’t anticipate how long it would take me to actually get the business up and running. There is much about the world of yarn I still have to learn. There have been many mistakes along the way, but being able to meet the challenges of mistakes made increases your competency as a business owner and grows your confidence.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Uncommon Yarn – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are a fiber store that is working to build a community of makers and offer different products to knitters and crocheters. As our name implies, we have worked to curate a collection of “uncommon” fiber products. By working to stock a range of independently dyed yarn, we hope customers are able to discover unique products while in our store. We have also worked to make Uncommon Yarn a welcoming space where makers can come and create, interact, and be inspired.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Our biggest focus right now is on building the community and educational components of the business. We hope with time we will be able to offer a wide range of classes that promote learning within the maker community.
