Meet Patricia Baker of Marblehead Arts Association in North Shore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Baker.

Patricia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a child, my mother said that I was always drawing. She remembers from as far back as when I was able to hold a crayon at 2 years old that I was completely content with creating pictures. That love continued throughout my childhood and into high school where I entered many different art and scholarship competitions as well as participating in shows. I received several awards for those entries and continued on to Syracuse University in the School of Art to pursue my Illustration Fine Arts degree. Upon completion of college, I went directly to work in my field holding a number of positions as a graphic artist…………As well as continuing my own independent work which has been displayed in several shows, galleries and contracted for by collectors. Prior to becoming the Executive Director at MAA, I worked as a Designer and Creative Director for a small business which focused on marketing communication and leads going out to a large target market. The opportunity to become the Executive Director for MAA is a perfect compilation of the work that I have done my whole life and my love of the art world.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For the most part, I have had a highly successful career and have been so fortunate to work with many talented and creative people over the years. The art world, especially as a profession, is highly competitive and as such it is important to stay on top of whatever is new in technology, technique, approach, etc.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
The Marblehead Arts Association (MAA), founded in 1922, maintains a prominent position in the local art community. With over 550 artist, associate, and corporate members, the MAA annually exhibits over 1,200 original works across four galleries, featuring the full spectrum of visual arts and crafts by members and invitational artists.

The cornerstone of the MAA is its education and program opportunities. Art classes, musical and theatrical performances, and a signature lecture series are among the offerings to members and the community. The MAA proudly awards an annual scholarship to a graduating Marblehead student pursuing further education in fine arts.

What were you like growing up?
As a child, I was very interested in the way something appeared to me and without realizing the creative view of that, would share those thoughts with my sisters and in turn change the way in which they looked at the world. I love animals, particularly horses and dogs. I have always been a very social person and enjoy my family and friends.
