Today we’d like to introduce you to Pat Ramey.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve made music my whole life. Both my parents and all my 7 siblings played at different levels. Coming from central MA, we spent a lot of time in basements or barns just making music. I also was a DJ from 12 years old straight into college. There’s nothing worse than paying a child to come and do a bad job at your block party, I had to really dig deep into what it was about all genres that I liked.
My dad was into Jim Croce and Ray Charles, my mom had a few Joni Mitchell and Beatles records my brothers were into Grunge, my sister liked pop…all these people had independent ideas about how they viewed life, eventually I wanted to try and say something too.
My favorite artist has always pointed at things that we all universally known and never talk about. I am always after the “right” way to put something out there, so someone else can go “Yeah I know that feeling!” Songs are like little signals and I’m just on a search for my people:)
I have deep cuts by artist that I love, most of those songs have given me great insights about life. I guess part of what I want out of my own writing is to create music that gives people something as good as what I found…. plus, it’s way fun.
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
Loaded question… ok I think it’s easier than ever to make music and share it. There are like 10 apps I could think of that you could produce a “radio quality” song on.
I think the best thing local music sense can do is cultivate… If you want good bands to come play shows let small bands open for bigger ones… if everything is about headliners you never get to see what’s new.
Also shout out to The Record Co. in Roxbury for putting together that local Boston Album. The one tough part about music being so easy to create and share by the masses is that it’s hard to get anybody to take notice without the approval of some “taste-makers”, I think projects like that really help.
