Today we’d like to introduce you to Pat Coppola.
Pat, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I always wanted to be an artist. So I went to Massachusetts College of Art and came out with a degree in Communications Design as an Illustrator. I’ve held the title of Illustrator, Graphic Designer, Art Director and Design Director. I’ve worked mostly in the Newspaper and Magazine industry. But nothing has given me more pleasure than that of Artist and Craftsman.
I was asked a few years ago to create a personalized bride and groom for my niece Kaitlyn’s wedding cake. My daughter Rachel, the owner of Rachel O’Neil Event & Design, asked me to display my wedding couples in her shop for the brides coming in to work up their floral arrangements. That’s how Pat’s Caketoppers all began. I’m having a lot of fun with it.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The challenge for me has been anticipating any bumps that may come along. The key is to have good communication.
That’s why I ask for photos and images depicting exactly what the couple wishes to display on their cake. I use photos, tear sheets of magazines, swatches of colors to show attire, hairstyles, pets included, etc.
There haven’t been any problems yet and I hope by being proactive I can get ahead of any coming.
Pat’s Caketoppers – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Pat’s Caketoppers are custom-designed, handpainted couples for their wedding cake. The traditional couple will show eye color, hairstyles, wedding attire, a flower representative of the bridal party. In addition to showing the hairstyle and attire, they are wearing, cake toppers can have “personality”.
Some couples have themes to their weddings they can incorporate on their cakes. Mr & Mrs. Claus for a Christmas season, their favorite sports teams or a profession. The most interesting I have done was a skeleton couple for a Halloween themed celebration. Cake toppers are not just for weddings! Pets are also a popular addition. I love giving the opportunity to the client another way of expressing who they are.
Maybe, how they might have met in their profession or in a way they might have connected in their love for something special to them. A Red Sox fan with a Yankees fan? It’s been known to happen.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is a happy bride. : )
Nothing beats that.
