Meet Page Railsback

Today we’d like to introduce you to Page Railsback.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
The love of art and painting was a gift that appeared in my life at the time of my daughters’s birth 40 years ago. It just appeared and I began to paint and have not stopped since. Interestingly at the same time two of my sisters…. each in different locations began painting at the same time. I learned in first grade that I am a natural teacher…. from creating ‘the Double Bubble Fun Bird Club’ in second grade, to receiving a Master’s in Education. to teaching Yoga for 30 plus years to teaching painting workshops presently. The theme continues.

I did not attend Art school but have taken classes and workshops with wonderful Artists that have inspired me. Ros Farbush Cynthia Packard and Jennifer Pochinski to name a few. Living in NYC down the street from the Whitney Museum 20 years ago I walked into a Deibenkorn exhibit and that took me to a whole to place. I was awarded a residency at the Fine Arts Work Center in Province town in 2013 through the Copley Society in Boston and began to explore Expressionism and Abstract painting. My work can be seen at the Copley Society in Boston, The Left Bank Gallery in Wellfleet,Solace Studio and Gallery in Long Beach Island NJ, South Street Gallery in Hingham MA , Faith Collectiva in Puerto Vallarta Mexico and in my Studio in the Sandpaper Factory in Rockland MA. Stay tuned…I will also be showing my work in my new Barn in Hadley MA soon.

Please tell us about your art.
I like to paint on big square canvasses. I paint still life’s, figures, landscapes., abstract shapes….it doesn’t matter…It is simply moving paint around and conveying Feeling. I paint intuitively and I don’t have any specific process that I begin with. Often, I have no idea what I am going to paint. I just become inspired as I prepare the canvas with house paint and an idea emerges and directs me. I use acrylic paint, charcoal, oil sticks and pastel., big brushes and palette knife. People comment that my style is recognizable whether realistic or Abstract. And that I have a very good sense of color.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
If I like my painting that is success. If others like my paintings and I receive an award or a sale that is frosting on the cake. I think it is essential to explore and experiment, not to let the work become too precious. This thing called creativity is fluid, it comes and goes and grows or not. You have got to be in for the long haul, to nurture it and just paint.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My work can be seen on my website, on Facebook, Instagram in my Studio in Rockland and my new Studio in Hadley MA or in the Galleries mentioned. My next workshop will be on Oct 13 at the North River Arts Society in Marshfield MA. The focus of this upcoming workshop will be painting the Still Life in an Abstract manner…. Painting from The Heart.
