Today we’d like to introduce you to Omama Marzuq.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Omama. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
Making people feel good is something I’ve always known how to do. Having women feel strong and confident in themselves is something that I knew was apart of calling. And giving back is something that was embedded in me since I can remember.
Finance was something that wasn’t ever discussed in our family. I knew we had some but didn’t understand the concept of how everything worked. I started working as a babysitter at the age of 10, and then legally at the age of 14 at a restaurant. Working and saving money was something I knew how to do.
I knew that I wanted to make an impact and leave a legacy in the world, but I didn’t know how or what. I kept working these dead-end jobs, barely getting by and decided to drop out of college (I eventually went back) because I didn’t know what road I should be taking.
In May 2010, I started working for a company called Fearless Life Solutions where I was an accountability coach for real estate investors. I was stepping in the right direction, but something was missing. The calling to empower people was piercing in my soul and I didn’t know how to do so.
One day in 2012, one of my clients out in California asked me if I ever thought about being a financial advisor. The thought never crossed my mind. My background was psychology and marketing. I knew nothing about finance, I wasn’t corporate kind of person, and I didn’t have the licensing to talk about finance at the time.
At the same time that this conversation was happening, I received book ‘How I Raised Myself From Failure To Success In Selling’ by Frank Bettger. That book transformed my life. I knew right there and then that I need to get into the financial world. I studied and studied, taking me four times to pass the Health Insurance exam and 13 times to pass the Life Insurance exam.
I worked at an ice cream parlor to get extra money, borrowed money from my brother, just so I can take these exams. I wanted and needed this. Empowering people, especially women, minorities, and veterans was something I was very passionate about. I wanted individuals to feel confident in themselves in regards to their finances.
I was looking for a company that believed in me and can help me grow into the leader I was meant to be. I worked for a few financial companies, but they weren’t the right fit for what I was looking for. Jan 2016, I joined Concord Wealth Management. The leadership, the empowerment for women, independence, structure, and the support was all there. I found “home.”
Ever since joining Concord Wealth Management, I have been able to serve more individuals with their finances, volunteer more, join a few boards and committees, and help individuals truly feel empowered regarding their finances.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but the road to success is never a smooth road. I’ve faced racism, sexism, sexual harassment. I’ve had old managers hit on me, been told to straighten my hair to make me look tame. I’ve seen couples yell at each other regarding finances, I’ve had family and friends roll their eyes at me and tell me to get a “real job.”
I’ve had doors shut in my face, the phone hung up on me, people yell at me. I’ve had cancelations, I’ve had rejections and defeat. I’ve had a few health issues. I’ve had a few clients pass away, I have had days where I don’t want to get out of bed. Days were I didn’t feel like I’m really making a difference. I’ve gone months without getting paid.
However, it’s a matter of waking up each and every day and asking myself how bad do I want this? Who can I help today? Is this my calling? And what impact can I have on someone? Persistence is my strong suit. I kept my mind intact though with positivity, reading, associating myself with better people. Every time I felt like an obstacle was arising, I would go for a run. Running sucks, but it was something I can do to clear my mind.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Concord Wealth Management story. Tell us more about the business.
Concord Wealth Management “offers clients a boutique-firm feel with big-firm service and support. We believe there’s no single more important factor in life than the value of strong, personal relationships. That’s why we’re focused on delivering personal care and attention to each and every client. We serve individuals, families and small businesses throughout the New England area guiding our clients to financial solutions for all of life’s stages.”
I specialize in Succession Planning for Businesses, Retirement, Life Insurance, and Estate Planning. I love working with individuals and families that have a heart. I especially enjoy working with people of color.
I’m most proud of the growth and the support towards female advisors. Concord Wealth Management really dedicates a lot to not only hiring female advisors but supporting them and training them to be better leaders. I also love the fact that we have the training to make better advisors each and every day.
What sets me apart from other advisors is that I keep it real. I do what’s best for the client, I have a friendly and straightforward personality. I want to be with my clients for the next 30 years, so doing what’s best for them is really important. When someone works with me, they become apart of the family. I’m also really involved with the community, so my clients don’t just see me in the office, but they see out and about caring about the issues that matter.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck. I believe in positioning yourself with the right people, the right mindset, and the right timing to align yourself to get the results that you’re looking for.
Everything and every job I have ever done has positioned me and prepped me to where I am and where I’m going. The law of attraction will bring “luck” into my life. When things didn’t go my way for whatever reason, it was the universe saying that I wasn’t ready for that coming or that there is something better in place coming.
Mindset is so important to be able to attract what is wanted. I give all the glory to God for being blessed for all the opportunities that have been presented my way. When you position yourself in a state of mind of winning, there will always be a lesson learned. We all have bad moments in our life.
