Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Chan.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Nicole. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My art background is in painting – Chinese brush watercolors. My academic background is in finance. I’m a recovering management consultant that felt creatively crushed. I left that career behind me, and embarked on what I had a passion for – photography. Six years later, we have a fantastic studio of five wedding photographers and filmmakers and I can’t imagine doing anything else that could make me happier.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When is entrepreneurship ever a smooth road? (Especially in the creative industry!) I loved the creative side of it – working with couples and families and grasping an understanding of their relationship to create meaningful images. What I didn’t understand was that the fun and creative portion is only 10% of running a photography studio. The other 90% is marketing, operations, strategic growth, post-processing, blogging, and all of the legal mumbo-jumbo! One of my major struggles was finding a way to do it all as a one-man show. As a startup with very little funds, that was challenging. There were never enough hours in the day nor enough hands to do it all!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Nicole Chan Photography (soon to be rebranded as Nicole Chan Studios) is a Boston photography and videography studio that specializes in weddings and families. We’re known for impeccable service. We’re a team of creatives that care about you. We all have deep roots in families and are dedicated to authentic storytelling. We are allergic to all things cookie-cutter and believe that all photographs and films that we create should be uniquely reflective of your relationships with the people you love. Our style is colorful, bold, and genuine.
What were you like growing up?
I think we were all very quirky. We were all keen observers in life. We all have some sort of art background – drawing, painting, and sculpting. We’ve all known each other since elementary school or high school and have grown up with similar creative pursuits as well as outdoor adventures (biking, climbing, hiking, etc.)
