Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Bezemes.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It all started the week of career day in my small elementary school. I was dressed up as a hair stylist with my little tool belt; including scissors and a blow dryer. The dream stayed the same until high school! I was extremely fortunate to be accepted into the cosmetology program at my high school. At the young age of seventeen, I accepted my first position in the beauty industry as an assistant at Green Tangerine Spa & Salon. An exciting beginning to the career I had always hoped for. During my year and a half of assisting I learned about of course hair but also about life.
Although it was not always easy to be an assistant for so many stylists, I still use techniques I was taught there to this day. Finally, In September 2012, I was offered my first full-time stylist position at Lord’s and Lady’s Hair Salon in Danvers. I worked at this location for many years. This company was great to work for; offering me tons of education. I was always attending color and cutting classes, broadening my skills but I kept dreaming of more. I couldn’t help going back to my days in cosmetology school, I had a strong interest in skin care.
Some of my classmates went on to esthetics school after graduation and I found myself wondering if that was for me. I decided to stick to my dream. But being a young stylist, I found myself focusing on other things concerning my personal life at the time. I did not fully dedicate myself to clientele building, which is key in this industry. I left Lord’s and Lady’s for a small boutique salon. I thought if I took my career down a different path…. maybe that would work for me. The years to come were not easy. I bounced around to a few different salons, still unable to find my niche, I started questioning all my choices and what my passions actually were.
I took a break from salons and went into retail. This was a hard time for me, I felt as though I let go of a passion I held close the majority of my life. I questioned if I was cut out for a career in the beauty industry and if I should just pursue something else. After about a year break, I realized it. I still love making people beautiful but beauty does not end with just hair. I decided I owed it to myself to enroll in esthetics school. Though financially, I knew that path wouldn’t be easy I put myself through school anyway and I’m proud that I did.
In April 2018, I went for my esthetics state board (most nerve-racking day of my life) and finally became a licensed esthetician. A month later, I started my new journey at again Green Tangerine Salon & Spa. This time around I am more mature and even more driven to build myself a wonderful career. I am incredibly grateful to work in a salon that allows me to do both esthetics and hair in the same place. I feel so fulfilled being dual licensed taking care of my client in any way I can!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As anyone can imagine going after what you want is never easy! Of course, I struggled, but those struggles only make me appreciate where I am now even more. I think some of the toughest struggles I faced was my lack of confidence in my skills. When I was unable to find my perfect salon is when the doubt crept in. “Am I skilled enough to get to where I want to be?” were the type of questions I began to ask myself. That was rough, but the only thing I could do in those times was to be hopeful that someday I would be where I’m meant to be.
I also faced financial struggles along the way. Especially putting myself through esthetics school. Going to class five days a week and working two jobs made life stressful and busy. Personal relationships were strained because of my lack of time and money. I do feel the achievements are worth the sacrifice.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Green Tangerine Spa & Salon – what should we know?
Currently, I am an esthetician and stylist at Green Tangerine salon & spa in Peabody.
With my focus on esthetics, I specialize in customizable facials, lash lifts, lash & brow tinting as well as waxing. I love to improve the skin’s health, whether it be acne or aging, I’m here to help people feel comfortable and confident. I also enjoy sculpting perfect brows, from waxing to tinting enhancing the brow is one of my favorites. I would say great eyebrows is what our spa is best known for.
As for hair, I specialize in natural balayage, extensions whether it be tape or beaded, and up-dos. I also love to cut! I love creating all types of styles for all my clients including the guys! Being able to take care of all the beauty needs of my client is very rewarding. Green Tangerine is a one-stop beauty shop. From hair to skin to nails and massage, we offer it all.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I am beyond lucky to have the family and friends that I have. Without their advice, patience, and constant support. I don’t believe I’d be anywhere close to the woman I am today. My mom has always been the uplifting positivity I needed. Her faith and belief in me is what always encouraged me through tough times along the way. My father was also another strong person I could rely on when things didn’t always go as planned. He is always pushing me to be my best.
I also have to credit my teachers at Elizabeth Grady. They made my time at school enjoyable and taught me so much of what was needed to take on this new path! Their understanding and patience with the hiccups I encountered during the esthetics program is what helped me succeed and graduate.
