Meet Nichole Lancaster of Blue Bumble Creative in Greater Merrimack Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nichole Lancaster.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It all stared in a basement by a woman looking for more work life balance. Back then we called ourselves Diversity Studio. Since then we have moved three times, changed our name three times, added multiple services and worked with hundreds of wonderful clients we like to call colleagues.

Has it been a smooth road?
After 17 years of business, we have definitely had our share of struggles. Our most significant obstacle was our name, our identity. “Diversity Studio” came with unforeseeable challenges. Over time the public understanding and perception of the word “diversity” went from describing something versatile to the concept of cultural diversity, or financial diversification. Since we had no ability (or desire) to diversify a retirement plan or help add diversity to a workforce we knew had to make a change. We knew we needed a name that said, “Graphic Design Agency”.

However, we moved too hastily, and re-branded to ‘DSI Marketing Communications’. Our big “re-brand” only abbreviated Diversity Studio Inc. and added our main services, marketing, and communications. Yes – it was a real mind-blowing marketing strategy here. Back then, we feared change; we feared rejection. We worried that our clients would not understand and that our team would not be able to communicate a drastic re-brand.

The change helped, but we still did not stand out in a sea of designers and printers. Not long after the re-brand, with a misdirected sales team (another struggle), we lost our identity as a Graphic Design Agency and slowly became known as printers. To compound matters, there were multiple other companies named DSI that were popping up around the country. Remember, how we acted in haste? Well, we did not trademark our name and were unable to maintain our position within the market, we were slowly becoming a wallflower.

In 2014, determined to refocus our business back to our core services; graphic design, website design and development, and production services our team dove into our second re-brand. Determined to make a splash in the industry, we needed yet another re-brand, but this time it needed to be completely different. From there, Blue Bumble Creative was born. The struggle for a name was real, but the journey brought us to where we are today, and for that we are grateful. These struggles lead to lessons learned:
– Always think through change.
– Always have faith.
– Always jump in with both feet.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Blue Bumble Creative – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Absolutely love the diversity this city offers. The people, the places, no two are the same and its crazy beautiful and exciting!

Boston tends gets a bad reputation from other parts of the country, for really no reason. Yes, we have the greatest quarterback of all time, but don’t hate us for it. I’m proud to live and work around Boston, and sometimes it just takes a conversation to open others eyes to the beauty of this city.
