Meet Nathan Brosey of Action Athletics in Newton and Wellesley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Brosey.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In 2012, my wife, Sheri, and I made the decision to leave behind our sales and consulting jobs and pursue our passion of coaching athletes of all ages and ability levels. We started Action Athletics with the desire to see people reclaim the fun in their lives through physical activity. We coached group exercise TRX classes, and worked with clients’ 0ne-on-one, like many other great training facilities in the Boston area. Business was going along great, when I decided to try out for American Ninja Warrior as a means of possibly getting our name out there. I’ve competed two seasons on the hit TV show, so far, and have yet to have any of my runs make the cut. However, the decision to simply try-out, and become part of the “ninja community” has changed our life and our business far more than 1 minute of national air time ever could. Soon, I started building obstacles around the gym. Purpose built pieces, like the Salmon Ladder, Warped Wall, and Unstable Bridge. Word got out that we had these things and we started receiving phone calls from other competitors, looking to train. Then, I received a phone call from one determined mother, who asserted that I take on her son as a client. After one day of working with him, I went home and told Sheri that we needed to start a program for kids. Since that day, it has been the most rewarding experience of both our lives. The hard work and long hours are returned to us tenfold in the support of the families we connect with. We take eager, young students every eight weeks and give them all the skills they need to become a ninja. Our obstacles are constantly changing, and we’re always “leveling up,” learning from our failures, ever overcoming obstacles together.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course not! Through the years we’ve had to deal with everything from flooded bathrooms to sweltering summer heat or no heat at all in the winter. There were months we didn’t take pay checks, trips to the Emergency Room, and impossible deadlines. Our constant struggle is to keep up with the relentless demand we’ve created, all while raising two young girls of our own. We try to set a high standard for everything we do. From the experience of our one-on-one PT clients, to the comprehensive curriculum of our kids’ classes and the quality of the obstacles we build. We pour everything we have into Action Athletics, and often joke about “bleeding Blue and Yellow.” It is always a struggle to succeed, but each situation is an opportunity to learn and grow.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Action Athletics – what should we know?
At Action Athletics, we train people of all ages to become better athletes. Our specialty is in overcoming obstacles. Whether preparing for a mud run, obstacle race, or American Ninja Warrior, our coaches are dedicated to not only teaching our clients how to rise above any challenge; we’re right there with them every step of the way. It is a team effort that achieves the amazing things we’ve been fortunate enough to accomplish. From Spartan Trifectas, triathlons and half marathons to National Ninja League championships and 19 foot Warped Walls, we pride ourselves on creating a family of positive support for all our athletes. Nobody goes it alone. When people step through our door, they can feel the positive environment we’ve cultivated. It is reassuring for adults and nurturing for kids. We genuinely care about every athlete, every performance, and every experience.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
There are little things from time to time. Maybe we wouldn’t have purchased so many sweatshirts, or thrown so much money at wall graphics that never went up. But, for the most part, we took our time, thought through every strategic move and weighed options before making big decisions. There’s really not a whole lot we would have or could have done differently.
