Meet Vic Stuhr of Music Go Round

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vic Stuhr.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have been involved in retail, one form or another for the past 30 years. Music instrument retail for the last 20.

My Music Go Round experience started in entry level sales, working my way up to management positions and a brief stint on the corporate side of Music Go Round. I am currently a partner/management of the Music Go Round located in Natick, MA.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There are always obstacles to overcome in anything we do. Will it ever be a smooth road?

Music Go Round – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a used musical instrument retailer. What that breaks down to is we buy and sell used music instruments, from our very own customers, in our local communities.

Our store is comprised of approximately 85% used gear. This creates a unique environment where you the customer are our vendors, without the gear our customers sell to us we would have a very depleted inventory.

We also provide services such as in-house stringed instrument repair and drop off service for band and orchestra instruments. I take great pride in providing what many customers refer to as “A real music store” I like that, to be able to keep a tradition like this alive is a great asset to the music and local business community.

We are the largest used instrument dealer in the New England area. As part of a larger franchise that is the largest used instrument dealer in the united states and possibly the world.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I would define success as a returning customer base, a low turnover rate in staff and a business that does this while still generating a profit. In today’s retail environment competing with online retail is a huge gamble and potential struggle for any business that sells the same item as the next person.

We have unique used items that are not readily available online and in your town. This allows us to not have to price match as aggressively or experience “showrooming and webrooming’ because there is no guarantee the customer can find the same item online that evening.
