Today we’d like to introduce you to Mothler Dalexis.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My love for DJing started in college. It started with me building a large collection of music thanks to napster and a fast T1 college internet network, where we all shared our music folders. Using that collection my friends and I threw our own house parties running 2 copies of WinAmp media player at the same time. I didn’t become a DJ right away but the collecting of music mp3s did not stop.
When I purchased my first home, I wanted to be able to throw my own parties so I decided to buy some DJ equipment. One month later my friend Chris Grassa asked me to DJ a New Year’s Eve party at his house. I didn’t have a clue what I was doing but I accepted. I started watching YouTube videos and trying out the different techniques. The party was a success and my DJ career begun that night! My DJ name initially was “DJ YeYe” (yeahyeah), named after my late father’s nickname. Later that summer I connected with Eddy Firmin, Owner of Savvor Restaurant and Lounge, he just opened and wanted to start building a Friday night lounge night. He said “come DJ on Friday nights, if anything it will be a live practice session for you”. A few late night conversations with Eddy, I knew I could make this a successful business. He recommended that I change my DJ name. I started to create my brand, Deejay Mot, The People’s DJ.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road but I’ve always believed in that “if it was easy, everyone would do it”. There is a lot that goes in the art of DJing that I did not know and I’ve learned and still learning. My first struggle was deciding, what type of DJ I mainly wanted to be. Thank you to DJ Frank Baptista, who DJed my wedding, for the first great piece of advice that helped me through that struggle. He said “Pick a lane and do that well”, and I decided I wanted to mainly be a mobile DJ and do private events.
My next struggle was having the right equipment, the equipment I initially purchased was not adequate. DJ equipment is very expensive so I had to make what I had work. I was using a mixdeck express with virtual DJ and some low quality speakers. I connect with my friend DJ SuperDuke and he was instrumental in helping upgrade my gear once I was ready.
Now that I had better equipment, how do I get my name out there I thought? I’m grateful to my cousin Rob, who is a promoter and does some great events in Boston, and DJ HypaTonez (aka DJ Rasbeans). They allowed me to open their nights and I willingly did it for free. DJ Hypatonez was the first person to directly tell me “your transitions are awful”. I knew this already but I really appreciated his honesty. I knew I needed to get better. I continued to self-teach via YouTube videos and watch other DJs live at Boston events. My wife gifted me a DJ class at MMMMaven in Cambridge. That year I saw a big change in my skills!
I continue to come against different challenges but I never let these challenges slow me down, I worked on them along the way.
