Meet Molly Curley of Molly J Swimwear

Today we’d like to introduce you to Molly Curley.

Molly, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am the lead designer and owner of the Molly J brand, Molly J Swimwear and Molly J Active. A little background on us; I grew up on Cape Cod and recently moved to NYC to pursue my modeling/acting career and to launch my swimwear line. I recently graduated from Bentley University with a degree in sales and marketing. I am signed with Maggie Inc in Boston and travel back often for bookings. I launched the Molly J brand 6 months ago and have seen great success so far. You may have passed a Molly J Swim billboard on the SE expressway leaving Boston this past summer! I have big goals for the Molly J brand and plan to launch an activewear line this summer. I was also awarded a Boston Fashion Award for Best Swimwear Designer!

I have always wanted to be an entrepreneur. Both my parents started their own companies and it was in my blood to be an entrepreneur. I had saved up enough money from modeling since I was 8 years old that I started my company fully self funding. I am at the point now where I am considering outside investors and really growing the company worldwide.

The reason I chose to design swimwear is because I grew up loving the ocean. I grew up on Cape Cod always on the water or by the beach. The ocean is something that is very close to my heart.

The logo for my company is the compass rose. The meaning behind the compass rose is to be the navigator of your own destiny. I wanted my company to have an inspiration aspect of it and I thought this logo fit perfectly and had a nautical touch. My swimwear is meant to be empowering. I have an ambassador program where every girl chosen has the same goal in mind: to make women feel more confident in themselves and to spread kindness and love where ever they go. Every “Molly J Girl” has a kind heart and exudes confidence. Molly J Girls are great role models for other women and young girls.

Has it been a smooth road?
Of course not! No success story is a straight line to the top. Since I have only been in business for under a year, I am nowhere near the point where I want to be, but that’s okay because I didn’t expect an overnight success story.

Starting my own company has been one crazy ride so far. There are some days when I am so happy and think I am doing great, and then there are other days where I think I am an utter failure, but that’s completely normal! Having doubts makes you work that much harder to make sure you don’t fail.

These first few months have also been a lot of trial and error. I have never owned my own company before so this is my first time at everything. I am learning what works and what doesn’t work and I am learning from my mistakes. Every mistake or failure I take as a learning experience and it helps me to push forward.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Molly J Swimwear story. Tell us more about the business.
Molly J Swimwear is a designer swimwear label specializing in the perfect fitting bikini and contemporary style. All of our swimwear goes through a rigorous design process where there are many samples made in order to create the perfect fit.

What sets us apart from other companies is the messaging behind our company and the logo. Molly J Swimwear is meant to be empowering as explained in the last question.

What I am most proud of is being a young female entrepreneur. I finished all my classes at Bentley University in three years and during my 4th year, the Molly J brand was born.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The swimwear industry is an extremely fast growing industry. Especially now in the age of social media. In addition to swimwear, activewear is growing even faster with the new age of “athleisure”.
