Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikhail Glabets.
Mikhail, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I studied film and graphic design and spent 10 years working as a graphic designer before becoming a photographer. I worked for small design firms and large corporate brands, doing everything from motion graphics to User Experience Design. This experience has definitely given me an understanding of strong compositions and interesting use of light, which I bring with me on every shoot. I first became interested in photography after randomly stumbling onto some wedding blogs late one night; it was the first time I had seen wedding photos look interesting and I realized I wanted to create those myself. I immediately went out and spent a whole bunch on camera gear and started photographing my friends, but it took me a few years to really get into it as a business.
Has it been a smooth road?
It was great having the financial support from my full-time job in the first two years of me taking up photography, but I quickly realized that I could only handle one creative beast, either photography or design—eventually one would suffer from lack of creative energy and attention. My early struggles in wedding photography were finding the perfect clients. While nothing is perfect, what I mean is Ideal, people who feel my vision and see themselves in my photos and are comfortable just being themselves in front of the camera. Showing the right work and shooting what I wanted over time helped me find the right people and do just that.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Mikhail Glabets Lifestyle Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Mikhail Glabets Lifestyle Photography is a wedding & lifestyle photography brand. The main part of my business is weddings, engagements and family photos. I do have corporate and interior clients as well, although that is another conversation, if not business. I’m proud of capturing the real in people—allowing people to truly have fun and be themselves while looking great and captured in their favorite environments with amazing light. I believe that real moments are better than gold, and showing those real moments is something I do that sets me apart from others in my industry. It’s not about trendy poses or techniques, but encouraging people to be themselves.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
How old Boston is, the character; while the roads are difficult and annoying, I’m reminded to look up and soak in the stunning architecture and the views around the Charles River. The diverse people and growing neighborhoods are very inspiring. My least favorite thing would be that you have to bounce all over to find great food; I wish it was all in one spot.
