Meet Mike Crowley of Gaybrook Garage in North Shore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Crowley.

Mike grew up in Beverly, just a few towns away. He grew up working in garages and after high school he enlisted with the Army National Guard. He was assigned to a tank unit. He served 8 years with the National Guard while continuing to hone his repair skills. He opened his first business in Beverly Farms.

When the lease in Beverly Farms ended he looked around and ended up coming to work for Gaybrook Garage. At the time he came to work for them Gaybrook’s current owners were beginning to think about retiring. After working for Gaybrook for a couple of years and getting to know the customers, he bought the business. He has owned Gaybrook for 4 1/2 years now.

While they mostly fix cars and complete Mass. state vehicle inspections people tend to bring them everything. They’ve fixed lawn mowers, tractors, and other various small engines. They’ve been known to bend the handles of clam forks for clammers.

Has it been a smooth road?
Owning a small business is never without its challenges. Winter in Essex tends to be a quiet time when we often wish we had a little more work to do. We have worked hard to build up our reputation in the community and hope that this winter will be our busiest one yet!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We want to be your neighborhood garage. We don’t specialize in any vehicles and are willing to work on anything. We offer fair and honest service to our customers. We really appreciate our customers.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
The big challenge with Essex is that it is a small town and has some seasonal clientele. Many of our customers head to warmer climates after the holidays and don’t return until late spring. Many businesses in Essex feel the pinch from January to March. I don’t know that there’s anything Essex can do to change that but it is definitely a challenge for small businesses and new businesses starting out.
