Meet Michelle Powers of Centre Yoga Studios in Lynnfield and Woburn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Powers.

Michelle, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In 2008 I took my first yoga class for strictly the physical benefits. My body transformed, I developed greater strength, stability and flexibility in the first 30 days that after years of working out at the gym I have never achieved. Something else had changed that I didn’t expect, I had started to feel a sense of calmness on my mat, and this calmness followed me off my mat and into my life. In 2009, I enrolled in a Yoga teacher training program, just for the free yoga classes and with no intention whatsoever on teaching yoga. After graduation I knew I wanted to open my own yoga studio but knew nothing about running a business, was a single mom of 2 boys and had a full time job in the medical field. I immediately started teaching weekends and evenings around my full time job. At the end of 2012, I had an opportunity to quit my full time job and pursue a full time yoga career. While house hunting in Lynnfield, I came across a cute shop that would make a perfect little yoga studio. I opened Centre Yoga Lynnfield in Jan 2013 and 2 years later Centre Yoga Woburn was opened. We take pride in making Centre Yoga studios a place where everyone feels comfortable & welcome, like they belong.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have personally have never came across a road that was completely smooth without any bumps or potholes. Over the past 4 1/2 years since I decided to open my first yoga studio, of course there have been “bumps’ in the road. I would call them challenges rather than struggles and all learning experiences.

“It’s only yoga”, is a phrase I’ve heard time and time again making the analogy that owning a yoga studio should have different rules than other businesses, and not be so “business like”. But a yoga studio can’t stay in business on merely unicorns and lollipops and a few OMs. To answer your questions on challenges, I have the same challenges any small business owner has which myself and my administrative team work together to keep the business part running smoothly. This combined with our amazing teaching staff is how I feel we thrive.

Centre Yoga Studios – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We have worked hard to create an environment where judgments and expectations can be left at the door. Our studios invite you to come in, let go of what is happening outside of the space and truly connect with what is happening inside your body. Allowing all the benefits of the practice to go beyond just physical. A place you can call home, where you will find support, strength, compassion, understanding where you slow down long enough to find your true self. A place where you can just be present on your mat, express yourself freely, and more importantly let go and have fun.

We love and respect each and every human being that walks through our doors. Centre Yoga is not just a yoga studio it’s a community. A community that we together have created, where you will find unconditional love, support, and comfort. Just show up, the rest will come…

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
When students tell me how grateful they are to have Centre Yoga in their community and it has become like a second home to them….like family. It is so nice to see that the studio has brought joy into their lives. We love our Centre community!!!
