Meet Michelle Goldberg of Kakes by Kappy in Newton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Goldberg.

Michelle, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I live in Newton with my two teenage kids. My professional training is in social work, and I actually specialize in the treatment of eating disorders. I truly believe that one can bake a cake and eat it too!

My original inspiration for creating and making cakes comes from my childhood, and more specifically, my mom. Every year my mom would create wonderful three dimensional, buttercream frosted cakes for our birthdays. When my son Max was turning one, I realized I could never bring myself to purchase a cake. And so it began.

I began by using novelty cake pans and buttercream to decorate my cakes. This continued until Max had requested a specific cake that required the use of fondant. I have never looked back! Since that cake, I have continued to create specialty cakes and cupcakes with fondant; I am driven by the amazing way something can actually be made from fondant and then look like the real thing!

There is no better feeling for me than when my children see a completed cake and say, “Oooooh my gosh!” Nothing ever beats that!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It is always so much fun to come up with an idea for a cake with a client and then for me to try and figure out ways to execute the idea using only edible products. A challenge for me is finding a way to balance my private social work practice, my mom job and my passion for making edible creations.

Please tell us about Kakes by Kappy.
Kakes by Kappy is all me. While I specialize in all types of novelty cakes and cupcakes, I am known for my attention to the smallest of details and taking everyday objects and transforming them into miniature, sugar forms. I would have to say that it is this attention to detail that sets me apart from others.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory was going through every cake magazine with my sister in order to select the cake our mom would make that would knock the socks off all of our friends. If we couldn’t find one we loved, we would describe what we wanted and my father would do his best to do a sketch depicting what we wanted.

My mom would then work off those sketches and whip up exactly what we were looking for. She stayed up all night completing it, would never let us see it, and then surprise us at our birthday parties with the finished product!
