Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Cully.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Michelle. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started Xpressman Trucking & Courier in 1993 when I was 23 years old. I started Xpressman out of necessity after an ex-boyfriend told me I would never amount to anything without him. With sheer determination, no more than a pager and a map book, I set out to build my business out of my parent’s laundry room! I have been in business for over 25 years now and operate out of a 33,000 square foot commercial building in Randolph, MA. I believe that you get one chance to make your life anything you want it to be. I took a bad personal situation and used it as motivation to succeed and believe in myself. I am in the process of writing a book about my journey and I want to begin speaking more about successes and failures to send a message that “if I can do it, anyone can.” I was recently honored by Harpers Bazaar Magazine for their Fabulous at Every Age issue. I was chosen to represent the “40’s” category. It was a huge moment of validation to me because it was my business story and my personal challenges that set me apart. I met so many inspiring women who are doing wonderful things. I was proud to be among them.
Has it been a smooth road?
No it has not been a smooth road. I have had many challenges like most business owners but I am also in a male dominate industry which has made it even more difficult over the years.
One time I tried renting space, which I did secure but then they pulled out because they didn’t think I could afford it. A couple of days later, I had a driver of mine who was a male call and ask for the same space. They were ready and willing to rent it to him without any background check on his financials. I used that as a learning tool. There will always be challenges because of gender, race, money, etc. It is how you choose to overcome an obstacle and turn it into an advantage. When someone tells me I can’t I say, “watch me.”

Xpressman Trucking & Courier is a same day on demand/scheduled run delivery service. We service anything from a small document, specimens, pharmaceuticals, auto industry and truck loads to name a few. Anything from warehousing and distribution to storage. I am most proud of Xpressman because it gives people chances. People that may have never had a chance. Disability, let’s see here you fit in, no college degree, no problem, willing to work hard, welcome to the team. What sets us apart from others, is we pride ourselves in customer service. You will receive the same level of service if you are a one time customer or repeat customer. The foundation of the company was built on that.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I do think Boston is a good starting place for any business. We have a diverse category of people and culture. Traffic like anywhere is always an obstacle.
