Today we’d like to introduce you to Michele Mercaldo.
Michele, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I went to Massachusetts Collge of Art and graduated with Bachelor’s In Fine Arts in 1982.
I worked in several mediums and art related jobs. In 1987, after working for another jeweler, I realized my love for metalsmithing. I have been focused on the jewelry discipline ever since.
It was then that I began participating in the American Craft Council shows as well as other high end juried retail craft venues and began developing my aesthetic and my craft. I traveled to these shows until 2004 when I decided to open a gallery /studio located in the South End of Boston.
Opening the gallery was a means to grow my wedding/engagement collection as well as create more one of kind pieces. The setting allowed me to work intimately with clients creating custom pieces from their heirloom jewelry, recycling their metal and stones. The gallery also gave me the ability so show cases other contemporary jewelers’ work.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest challenge when making your own art and business is staying focused and being persistent.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
The work that I make is modern, clean, minimal. I work geometrically and precisely but always by hand which brings a softness and human touch to my design. Designing for me is an editing process, a careful selection of proportion and scale.
When my jewelry design is successful the result is a pure form that is both ancient and current, enhancing the inherent beauty of the wearer. Focused on jewelry making for 31 years I have a prolific collection in all of the metals, silver, gold, platinum, and palladium.
The one of a kind work has grown and incorporates unusual gemstones. I love my studio/ gallery for its’ ability to present and produce my work as well as the work of fellow artists.
What were you like growing up?
I had many interests as a child. I was willing to try anything that was presented to me. I really liked to play the board game “Operation”.
