Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Vigorito.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Michael. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I graduated Suffolk Law in 2016, and had decided long before that I wanted to start my own firm. I had known since 7th grade I wanted to become a lawyer. As soon as my idea went public that I was going to be starting my own firm, I faced all sorts of adversity. Everybody became a critic, including friends, family, and professors. Whatever support group you would expect to have in starting a venture, I did not. But that only motivated me more to succeed.
The practice of law is a cutthroat industry, and people have a notion that you need an older, gray-haired lawyer in order to get a good result. There are nearly no entrepreneurs in the legal field now-a-days, especially not ones that start a business right out of law school. And I will qualify that – there are very few who start a business right out of law school, but really have no idea what they are doing. I gained experience in law school working at other law firms throughout the summers and the school year, which set the foundation for me to go off on my own. There were a few other graduates who started their own practices, but from what I understand, they really are clueless in the practice and do not know how to do very basic things (particularly in the litigation world).
Fast forward just over one year – I was selected to SuperLawyers Rising Stars which selects the top 2.5%-5% of lawyers in the state through a patented selection process. Learning that I was selected was one of my proudest moments. All the people that had initially criticized me and said I would never succeed suddenly became the biggest fans who, according to them, “had always supported me”.
We continue to do excellent work. Most attorneys do not conduct a trial until they are 5 years into practice. We had ours in our first year in Superior Court. We’ve gotten some major settlements for our clients and overall every person that’s walked into our firm has gotten exactly what they sought out.
I personally believe people are fascinated by lawyers to a certain degree. The media has helped make this happen, and shows like Suits make the profession seem sexy in many ways, which is not inaccurate. What we do is just as much an art as it is a science, the work is rewarding, and
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The struggles initially included being doubted by peers and colleagues, family and friends. Then, the typical struggles of proving to clients that I’m competent enough to represent them despite my young age. All of this on top of balancing understanding the ever-changing law and rules of civil litigation procedure.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
This business is a boutique law firm in the financial district that specializes in business litigation (including employment law, breach of contract, consumer protection, insurance litigation, and whistleblower). We represent domestic and international clients, particularly in Europe.
What sets us apart (besides being dedicated to our clients and having an impressive track record of resolving several hundred matters in just a little over a year in business) is the fact we are a very young firm. Both I and my partner are newly minted attorneys that are often taken lightly, which has its advantages.
I passed the SuperLawyers patented selection process to be selected to SuperLawyers Rising Stars (top 2.5% of lawyers in MA are selected to this) in just the first year of practice.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was always the black sheep – the European misfit. My parents are both from Italy so I was raised in a European fashion with European values. After recently visiting Italy I realized I was the true embodiment of “too foreign for here and too foreign for there”…no matter where I am, I don’t quite fully belong. And I am completely fine with that.
I grew up an only child, which lent itself to my success in my opinion. I was always very independent as a result of it, and never really cared much what people think. Part of that attitude is why I was able to do what I did in the legal field at this young age and be successful at it.
I’ve always been quiet and reserved, but outgoing and sociable. I love to be out and meet new people as much as I can. At the same time, I value my alone time, since the phone never stops ringing anymore.
