Meet Michael Melander of Treatment Training Wellness in Back Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Melander.

Michael, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I came out of Chiropractic school in 2010 and knew that I thought about patient-care different than many of my peers. I was generally dissatisfied with the standard of care advocated by providers of varying disciplines in the pain/rehab community. I was fortunate within my first full year in practice to acquire a small practice in the Copley Square area that allowed me time to navigate the experiences of running a small-business/private practice and carefully expand my patient-base in a deliberate manner. I set out with the goal to help people as much as possible, and as quickly as possible regardless of their condition. At times, that meant seeing a patient once and saying “call me if you need me”. At times, that meant referring to a different provider because my approach was not the appropriate first-step in an individual’s recovery. Above all, I wanted to build trust and accountability with everyone who asked for my help.

My approach to care is predicated on helping people restore the fundamental responsibility of their many mechanical musculoskeletal systems. If an area of the body is built to be strong and stable, then “treatment” had better be creating strength and stability in the system. If an area of the body is built to mobile, then “treatment” had better be about efficiently mobilizing the relevant tissue interfering with range of motion. I gravitated toward soft-tissue injury early in practice as well, and aggressively pursued education in Active Release Techniques® (ART). As of 2017, I was asked to instruct ART and I have since done so in the USA and Canada.

Over the years, I built strong relationships with a number of like-minded professionals in Boston, including the well-known, Dr. Stephen Cabral, a Naturopathic (functional medicine) provider. Dr. Cabral had built a wellness spa in the Back Bay offering nutrition services, personal training, and massage therapy. Dr. Cabral approached me in 2017 and asked if I wanted to take over the massage and personal training business. The inquiry did not require much thought, as the potential I envisioned by integrating my chiropractic practice with those services was overwhelming. I decided immediately that ongoing education about pain science, orthopedic evaluation, and rehabilitative exercise would elevate the quality of care rendered by every provider on-site. As a result, all providers at Treatment Training Wellness are educated monthly in an attempt to constantly improve their evaluation and intervention abilities.

At this point, TTW is about to add a 12th provider to the team to accommodate our rapidly growing patient-base. I know that we have barely scratched the surface of our potential.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Like any venture in life, there have been struggles and anxieties. All of them were equally unpredictable and ultimately inconsequential. I believe that if I operate my business with integrity, and foster a workplace that is inclusive and respectful and appreciative of all clients and employees, that any “struggle” will not amount to anything. Stay positive, breathe believe receive….sounds crazy, but those mentalities and that energy work.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Treatment Training Wellness story. Tell us more about the business.

We expect every person who leaves our facility to be better than they were when they arrived, regardless of the provider they saw or the factors motivating their session.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck is a difficult concept to objectively evaluate. A professional athlete who I’ve worked with for years once told me that “luck is for the unprepared”. I think that is a fair commentary. To attribute any successes or failures to luck would do a disservice to all of the effort expended day in and day out.
