Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Magee.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born in Detroit, MI but moved to Tennessee when my parents divorced. I remember at the age of six my mother bought a video camera and she would let me just run around making silly movies. Since then, I have always loved being behind the lens. From 6 to 15 years old, I was strictly making films and then I was introduced to photography by one of my high school teachers. She suggested that taking pictures would be good for me because I have always looked at the world in a unique and weird way. Once I began taking pictures, I never stopped and here I am today.
Please tell us about your art.
My work is pretty moody with nostalgic tones. It is something about that vintage look in a photo that brings out a certain emotion to me. I love working with actual people and taking minimalistic posing with unique backdrops to create emotionally driven photos. When someone takes a look at my work I hope that it stirs up whatever emotions they feel in a deep way. I don’t want people to look at my work and say “oh that’s pretty” I want them to see it and it connects them to a memory of their own. That emotional connection to my work is my biggest inspiration.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
I think if you are looking to connect with other artists you have to just get out and do so. Go to social media and reach out to other photographers. Attend meetups and don’t be afraid to speak. The truest saying to man is a closed mouth will not be fed. I know for some of us who are introverted it is difficult to socialize but great rewards come with a greater risk and you have to be willing to take them.
