Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Hines.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Michael. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Having grown up around a family business I was enlisted to come to the shop and work at a young age. Once I was at a point when I was capable of cleaning the bathroom or sweeping the floor I was deemed worthy of earning a paycheck at age 12. My first fulltime – 40 hour work week of employment.
As I matured my vision was not to work in this industry as a career, although I enjoyed the physical work and satisfaction of repairing a vehicle properly the first time I thought accounting was pretty cool to. After a stint at college I realized that sitting at a desk all day was not what I wanted to do long term so I came back to the family business and was full time again at 19. From 19 – 26 I was a technician until my father, Mel, went into semi-retirement and someone had to run the business side of things. I then ran the business as the sole person on the front end, greeting customers, discussing solutions to their transportation problems and running the administrative part of the business. I did this until I became the stop to the business growing anymore and I got wise and hires some good people. Thirty three years later we employ a staff of ten and are celebrating the companies 55th year in business.
Has it been a smooth road?
Finding staff that has the same “care” factor for customers and who have pride in what they do has become difficult. I was blessed to take over an existing business that had a great reputation and it was instilled in by my father that if you take care of the customer first everything else will fall into place.
Changing technology is always a challenge and there is a need for constant training by all the staff, be it automotive of from a communication and marketing stand point.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Since 1962 we have specialized in transmission repair and that, to this day is 75% of what we do, in the last 12 years we have expanded our services to complete automotive repair as that is what our customers asked for.
We are definitely the first name that come to mind for transmission repair and service in the Metrowest area as today we are servicing the grandchildren of grandparent that my father did business with.
I guess our longevity in an ever changing business is what I am most proud of.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel that Boston and the surrounding cities are a great place for businesses like ours. If you have the ability to be patient and communicate with the many different nationalities that the area has and treat everyone equally and as you would like to be treated then you can be successful.
