Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Boyle.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Michael. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I began my career at Boston University in 1983 as an assistant athletic trainer and quickly quit my paid position to become a volunteer strength and conditioning coach.
I worked at BU until 1997 as the strength and conditioning coach for all varsity sports. In 1997 I opened Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning with my partner Bob Hansen and also continued as the strength and conditioning coach for men’s ice hockey at BU.
For the last twenty years we’ve trained young athletes from middle school through the pros and in the last decade also moved heavily into personal training and adult fitness.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has been far from smooth. We’ve had four locations, lost leases, and lots of other ups and downs. I think the big struggle is balancing building a business and being dads and husbands.
Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I think we are most proud of the fact that we change people lives. We do sports performance training, personal training and adult small group training.
We help adults get healthy, we help kids improve self-image and self-esteem.
I used to think we were in the sports training business but, now I like to tell our employees we are in the life changing business.
It’s amazing to see a child develop confidence or and adult become healthy and pain free.
What sets us apart is that we know that “no one cares how much you know until they know how much you care”.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
As I’ve aged, my definition of success has changed. I think when you are young, it’s about money. However as you age, it becomes about leaving a legacy. We have kids that come back as adults and continue to train at MBSC. We have whole families that train. What stands out is the community we’ve built and the lives we’ve changed.
