Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Mills.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Music has been dear to me since I was a child. My mother tells me I was singing before I could talk. As I went through school music became more and more the primary focus for my life. I knew that in my heart I was doing something that I was supposed to be doing. For 7 years outside of high school I played with a band, and we toured all over the East Coast. We took our music as far as we could, but in the end, it was time to move on. Now I am working on my solo career, and I feel so alive and excited by this new journey. Change is a scary thing, but we know deep in the pits of our stomachs what is calling to us, and what is the right path. My music today is evolving and growing, and I hope to be working with a full band again by this time next year.
Please tell us about your art.
I am a singer/song writer and a performer and I live to be a creative being. My music has been going through a lot of changes, but R&B indie pop seems to consistently remain my genre. I am inspired by strong female vocalists, and I always strive to adopt their confidence and find it within myself. Because there is freedom in expression, my love for music is something that I want to share with others. Passion is something that deserves to be highlighted and shown off, and my music gives light to my love for singing. When people hear my music, I want them to feel warm and, in the moment, and in my performances, I aim to connect.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
I feel that we may need art more now than ever. In a world where we are constantly connecting on the internet, but not having personal connections in life, I feel art is one true way to find connection. Loneliness comes with excess negative thinking, and I find that art is a beautiful escape out of that darkness. Music has the ability to put the phones away and entice people into a real moment. For me, there is a need to show the real potential within our own minds, and it would be beneficial for us as a people to see that power. Society likes to hide our powers and put people into boxes, but as an artist I want to break out of the molds. Art has the strength to pull all of us out of ourselves and into something more connected and beautiful. And in this climate now-a-days, I think we need more of that true connectedness. Go see live art and find like-minded souls who are also just looking for some love in this world. We all deserve love.
