Meet Melissa Hammond

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Hammond.

Melissa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Always passionate about drawing and photography, I wanted to find a career where I could utilize my creative skills but with a more stable income. In my mid-20’s, I was trying to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up and my mother suggested, I go to interior design school. As soon as I started school, it just felt right and I’ve been at it ever since.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s never a smooth road! When I graduated, it was 2002 and there was still so much economic uncertainty in the world after 9/11 and work was scarce. I was offered a full-time position with Kravet in their Seattle showroom and jumped on it. I was fortunate enough to also juggle some part-time work with a couple of well-known local designers to gain some experience. I started getting some small projects of my own and felt like I was ready to launch my own business. Then, my husband got a job in California, so we moved and I had to start all over again. I worked for other people, then went out on my own, then had a baby so things stalled out again. After three years, we moved to the Boston area (where I’m from), so I once again started over. This time, it was easier because I knew we were here to stay, but it’s still hard to juggle work and family. I’ve learned a lot about myself along the way and have, through trial and error and a great business coach, created a business model that works for me and my family. I’ve also been fortunate to have some wonderful clients along the way and that makes all the difference!

Please tell us about Hammond Design.
We are a residential interior design firm working with clients throughout the Greater Boston area. We specialize in transformations of existing homes through renovation or redesign as well as custom new home construction. As an organization, we provide a multi-level approach to design by establishing a clear set of design plans and project expectations so the client and other trades involved know what the scope of work and financial information is required to complete the job. We, then work closely with our clients from start to finish to make sure what’s on their wish list is brought to life.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I don’t think so. I’ve learned so much along this journey and I think you need that experience of failure to make you more successful.
