Meet Meghan Perlow of Poppy Floral in Chelsea

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghan Perlow.

Meghan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my career in the field of Interior Design, from designing Starbucks stores in Seattle to Sports Architecture firm Populous in Kansas City, and eventually as the Director of Interiors at Boston firm Arrowstreet. As Poppy Floral continued to grow, I left the world of Architecture to pursue the chance to run my own business.

My passion for floral design started as a simple request from a good friend to design her wedding flowers, after that I was hooked! I loved the hands-on designing that takes place each day, and challenges of working with a natural material that can change so rapidly. Floral design got me out of the office environment and into a totally different type of designing, one that makes each client’s vision come to life on their wedding day.

Each year I continue to develop the business and up our design game, what started in my kitchen 6 years ago, has now grown to a brand new 1,500 sq. ft. studio located on-site at the New England Flower Exchange, with over 70 weddings scheduled for this year.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Poppy Floral has always been a labor of love and passion, but continues to push my expectations on the dedication and hard work it takes to run a successful business. Starting out I was a one-woman show, meeting with every client, picking up every flower order, creating every single centerpiece and bouquet, and then carrying each item through the back corridors of many Boston venues. That dedication and endurance has allowed me to continue to grow an amazing client base and relationships with some of Boston’s top wedding venues. Now we have a team of designers in our studio, and an amazing crew to assist with the growing size of floral installations we create throughout New England. One of the biggest struggles of running a small business is that is can be so personal, especially when it involves the pressure of getting a bride’s wedding day just right. By being able to let go, and focus on specific aspects of the business that were passionate to me, I could bring on a team of designers that could excel with their own strengths. Letting go of certain tasks was tough, but crucial to allow our business to serve clients in the best possible way.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Poppy Floral – what should we know?
Poppy Floral is a floral design studio that focuses specifically on weddings throughout the Boston area and beyond. I’m particularly proud that we’re able to serve wedding clients of all budgets, from brides who just need a few bouquets that can be picked up at our studio, to luxury weddings that involve a full team of designers to create massive custom installations. If a couple is passionate about high quality florals and design for their wedding day, they have the same great experience and level of detail regardless of their wedding size. While we’re continually sought out by high-end client’s for our level of quality, dedication to design, and personalized customer service, I feel passionate that all couple’s should have access to great wedding flowers. We just recently launched our DIY centerpiece kits, allowing those on a tight budget access to hand-picked seasonal florals and full instructions to create their own Poppy Floral masterpieces for their wedding day.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel we always strive to maintain a great client relationship throughout the design process. By educating our customers on the type of flowers and design that goes into their wedding day they really feel part of the process, and get that personal touch.

Bringing vendors into the planning process for your wedding day is really a personal experience, and we never forget that we have one chance to get it right!
