Meet Megan Amaral of LEGOLAND Discovery Center Boston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Amaral.

Megan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a kid, I played with LEGO bricks all the time. I would build houses and cities in my basement. I just always had a knack for figuring out how to build things with bricks. In high school, my mom suggested I look into studying architecture in college so I did.

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from Wentworth Institute of Technology. I then worked at the LEGO Store in Burlington as well as for an architecture firm. I heard about the competition to be the Master Model Builder for LEGOLAND Discovery Center when they first opened in 2014 through a coworker at the store and signed up.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
One of the biggest challenges for me was when I competed in the Brick Factor competition in 2014 and didn’t win. I was really disappointed and still loved the concept of LEGOLAND Discovery Center Boston so I applied to be a Duty Manager.

About a year and a half after we opened, our previous Master Model Builder left the position and another competition was held. This time, I ended up winning. I like to tell that story to kids too because sometimes you don’t get what you want the first time, but it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try again.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with LEGOLAND Discovery Center Boston – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
LEGOLAND Discovery Center Boston is an indoor LEGO themed attraction that is geared to kids aged 3-10. We like to create unique experiences through the power of play and using your imagination and creativity with LEGO bricks. We are owned by Merlin Entertainments which is the largest entertainment company in Europe that runs 124 attractions in 25 countries across four continents.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are always adding new elements to the attraction which is exciting to me. We recently opened a new LEGO Star Wars MINILAND Model Display, debuted a new 4D movie called LEGO NINJAGO Master of the 4th Dimension and completely renovated our cafe into a new Coffee Shop that now serves Starbuck beverages.

This year, I’m planning to do some big LEGO builds which will be both challenging and thrilling. I love to come up with creations that both kids and their parents can look at and just be in awe of. One of the most rewarding parts of my job is to talk to kids about building with LEGO bricks and sharing that experience with them at LEGOLAND Discovery Center.

I love that it really is such a timeless toy that you can play with into adulthood because it’s all about using your imagination and creativity. We also host Adult Nights once a month which is a chance for adults without kids or adults with kids who want a fun night out to check out the attraction. Our one in May is always a prom theme so everyone dresses up and we have a DJ so that’s one of the most popular events of the year.
