Meet Matt Logan of Concord Wealth Management

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Logan.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
At the age of 23, I was absolutely broke living in my father’s basement with a college degree and over a 100,000 of student loan debt. I lost my last couple hundred bucks in an internet scam and I was at the lowest point in my life with no direction as to what I wanted in life never mind a career path. In 2007, I posted a resume that highlighted my background in landscaping and driveway sealing on some job sites. With zero professional experience and a job market tightening up prior to the following year’s Great Recession… my future only seemed to grow dimmer. That was all until I received the call to interview for an opportunity that would forever change my life.

In the spring of 2007, I was offered an opportunity to join Met Life, one of the oldest and most premiere financial services companies at the time contingent on successful completion of a series of licensing exams required for the role of Financial Advisor.  That summer, I began studying for these rigorous exams one after another while working odds and ends jobs such as tree removal in order to put gas in my car.

I can remember vividly sitting on my back porch one afternoon highlighting my study material while covered head to toe in poison oak from a couple days of tree work which paid me $100 per day. Another low point in my life and set back at this time was when I received a $330 Bill from the emergency room visit I had as a result of treatment needed to rid me of that poison oak. The 3 days of pay at $100 per day in the hardest job I had ever worked was not even enough to cover it and everything I worked for was a loss.

Through perseverance and my families support, I was able to embark on my journey in the financial services industry in September 2007, with two suits to my name and no clue of what I was actually getting myself in to. By the end of 2008, with no formal training program, mentorship or background in marketing or finance I opened up 93 accounts and had brought on 50 plus clients. I was only one of two advisors in a firm of 200 plus advisors who qualified for leader’s conference (the highest recognition award based on production). From that moment on I was hooked! I continued to build a wide range of clientele by helping people all over Massachusetts with a vast variety of financial goals, from protection planning for young families in their 30s to retirement distribution planning for people approaching their 70s.

In 2010, I joined Penn Mutual to take my practice to the next level while continuing to manage and build new client relationships. This all changed in 2013 a couple months after meeting CEO of the future Concord Wealth Management John Laurito. I told him I wanted to be a leader and make a bigger impact in the organization outside of my personal results. He gave me a shot and once again not having any idea what I was getting into, I had to find a way to figure it out. By the end of that year, Concord Wealth Management had been established (Penn mutual’s New England channel), and I was leading a small team of advisors, while trying to fill empty offices and grow the bottom line. After quickly losing the only people I had become responsible for, I rebuilt a team that at that time was part of the bottom 20% in the country (among Penn Mutual distribution teams) to the top team in the country for three consecutive years 2014,2015, 2016. By 2017, our organization had 50 plus people and would receive accolades such as “top places to work” in 2017 (Boston Globe) and “Best financial Advisors” 2017 (Expertise).

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There were times as a financial advisor that I wanted to give up. Deals fell thru, clients backed out, a 9-5 job and steady checks seemed easier…. but at the end of every day, I was able to go to bed, wake up and just do it again. I never quit. I recall in my third year of the business calling my Dad who also ran a business.  Knowing at the time, he had a vacant spot for a role in his company that I thought I could be a fit for that offered a good salary. In the back of my mind I was hoping this call would lead to that spot. After venting to him about everything that I did not like about my business and how brutal every step of the process could be….he offered me his ear and sympathy but never the opportunity. The best thing he did for me that night was not give me what I wanted but rather what I truly needed…. no relief, no exit or back door to an easier way out.
