Mat, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Photography has always been a hobby since I was a kid. In 2015 my golf buddy had a newborn child. He was my first client and it sparked me that is something that I love to do. Since then I have learnt that photography business is 95% business and 5% photography. Business includes – marketing, finding clients, posting, website admin, social media
I needed something to differentiate myself. When I first started I didn’t charge a session fee and client purchase what they like. However, as business was growing I had to make changes. Now, what I do is. Charge no fee upfront. Client only pays after they see the final edited proofs and they are happy with them.
When I hired a photographer myself, I found out that many photographers don’t give you the full res digital file or one with watermark and no print rights. I made it clear to my clients that they will get the full res digital file without water mark
Key to success is make your client happy. They will come back year after year and tell all their friends about it.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When I first started out I charged no session fee with no minimum purchase. I had 2 photoshoots where client did not reply after seeing the proofs. Those photos were beautiful mind you. Since then I have changed my pricing to prevent wasting my time.
Had a client that requested the watermark to be moved to the edge. Hence the watermark was not covering photo. That client never bought any photos. My guess is those photos were cropped. I learned my lesson that watermarks are there for a reason.
