Today we’d like to introduce you to Martin Elliott.
Martin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I had the idea for Boston Pizza Tours back in 2011 when I was living in the North End and working as a Boston tour guide. A friend of mine, who’s a world traveler and big foodie, came home from NYC after a recent trip. This girl could not stop talking about a food tour that she has taken in Manhattan. She talked about this tour for days – about how good the food was, about her fantastic tour guide and how much fun that she’d had.
Living in the North End at the time, I started thinking – not only is the North End home to some of the very best restaurants in the city, it’s also Boston’s oldest neighborhood. I wondered if a walking tour that combined the rich history of this neighborhood, along with some of its delicious food, might make a unique tour experience.
The idea for Boston Pizza Tours was born, and we started tours in 2012.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting a new brand in the busy Boston tourism industry is a daunting task. I started introducing myself and my new pizza tour idea to some of the owners and managers of my favorite restaurants and pizzerias in the North End. It was tough – most didn’t even understand the concept of a food tour, but they all wished me luck.
Boston Pizza Tours has now been in business for over 5 years and believe me, those same owners and managers LOVE when I call for pizza now!
Please tell us about Boston Pizza Tours.
Walk, Learn, Eat ….and repeat! Boston Pizza Tours is a food tour business that combines learning & eating. Learn the city’s Colonial & Revolutionary history on the Freedom Trail, and eat slices from some of Boston’s very best pizzerias. Some tours concentrate on Boston’s rich history, others on Boston’s great food – Boston Pizza Tours’ gives you both!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I eat pizza, drink beer and tell stories for a living – I wouldn’t change a thing!
