Mark, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We started a dog-walking/pet-care business 10 years ago this month. After seeing how under-served the pet community was in Dorchester, we decided to open a pet-supply store in the Lower Mills neighborhood a little over 3 years ago. We also opened a daycare for small dogs (40-lbs and under) on Neponset Ave.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The Pet Supply took off pretty quickly. The daycare took a little longer to get going, but is now regularly at capacity.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Pooped Pooch Pet Supply – what should we know?
When we started the company 10 years ago, we decided to make honesty our number one priority. Many pet-care companies promise whatever it takes to get your business, but if we don’t have room for you on our schedule at the time you request, we’re upfront about it. And if we promise you your dog will be out for a certain length of time, you can be assured that he or she will. As for the Pet Supply, we focus on high-quality food, toys, and treats, but we don’t charge boutique prices. Most new customers are surprised to find that I sell their kibble cheaper than their current store. And we’re constantly trying to find new and unique items to delight and entertain your furry family members.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
We’ve always felt like there should be more communication between people in the industry. There are plenty of pets to go around, so we have always worked closely with other dog-walkers/pet-care providers in our neighborhood. It’s nice to have a network of people we can refer to, especially if we don’t have room for a new client on our schedule. We even give other dog-walkers a discount at our store!
