Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Killoren.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Mark. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I remember the feeling of being a little boy and watching my dad go to work as a carpenter and sometimes even being able to go on the job sites with him that feeling has stuck with me till this day. Every time I step on a job site or start a project I am proud of the field I am in and the company I started. I was mostly self-taught, I have been working in the construction field for over 8 years now. After doing odd end jobs here and there for various companies I then decided to take a risk and start my own company. I have taken risks my whole life but starting this company has been the most unsurpassed one I have made so far. I live and breathe Sluggers Home Improvement. There is no greater feeling then watching a vision you had as a little child come to life and flourish. Sluggers Home Improvement is a family run company consisting of myself, my girlfriend Lourdes, my brother Jeffrey and my father Mark Sr. We all have a love for construction and being able to see a project come to life from the ground up. This company wouldn’t be where it is today without the support I have from my team.
Has it been a smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Gaining capital to start this company was very hard to do. With no capital to start this company in the beginning I had to really push myself and stay motivated. The second equally as challenging struggle was building a team of people that honestly cared and wanted to see this company grow. As this company continues to grow our team gets bigger.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sluggers Home Improvement story. Tell us more about the business.
Sluggers Home Improvement specializes in home remodeling and renovations. I have a great team in house as well as sub-contractors that we work with. We assist our clients on budgeting, designing and making most visions they have come to life. We specialize in kitchens, bathrooms, decks, and more. I’m a big believer that in the construction field nothing sets one contractor apart from another contractor more than having a great team. We believe that taking your time, knowing your craft, knowing products, and just being honest with clients is the only way to do this business. Each and every contracting company should be doing the same thing. So we would say we respect and love this trade, on top of that we are always open to a client’s vision and want to see the project turn out the way they envisioned it no matter how big or how small.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
This industry is always changing. There is so much new technology out that can speed up a project and also slow it down. Codes in construction are constantly changing and homes are becoming safer, products are being built better and lasting longer. In terms of the design aspect of construction clients are looking to have their homes much more modern yet welcoming. Cool Neutral colors in tile, paint, counter tops and flooring seems to be a choice a lot of clients are going with. It’s hard to say how quickly things will change but I am welcoming it and I am constantly learning new trends and technology every day.
