Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark DiStefano and Chris Heinis.
Mark and Chris, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I went to medical school in Washington dc, at Georgetown school of medicine. I graduated in 1979. I went on to a general surgical residency from 1979-1981 followed by an emergency medicine residency from 1982-1984. I practiced emergency medicine for 15 years before deciding to go into hair restoration.
I was first introduced to hair restoration by my brother after he had his first hair transplant. I was intrigued and starting looking into it. Shortly after that, I attended my first conference and training in hair restoration. In February of 1994, I performed my first procedure. Since that time I have completed over 10,000 surgical cases and many more non-surgical treatments.
Has it been a smooth road?
Life is not a smooth road. From the start, I knew that I would do an excellent job as a surgeon. The aspect that I had no idea about was how difficult the business side of starting my own practice would be. My first struggle was convincing potential patients to allow me to perform the procedure on them when I first opened.
Of course, they were nervous with my lack of experience. Then there was the cost of setting up the office and advertising effectively. I set a max amount of money that I would put in before I would quit/give up and I almost hit that amount. Thank God I did not. We now have 5 offices throughout New England.
While the road has not always been smooth, it has certainly been rewarding. I have had the opportunity to travel the world to teach other physicians, including places like Vancouver, BC, Lucerne, Switzerland, Paris, Sydney Australia, Madrid Ft. Lauderdale, Boston. Prague to mention a few.
I have also had the opportunity to personally train 10 doctors in the art and science of hair restoration in my office over the years. They have gone on to treat thousands of patients over the years. One of the doctors (Chris Heinis, MD) that I trained is going to be taking over my practice. It is a great feeling knowing the practice is going to be in good hands moving forward.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with DiStefano Hair Restoration Center – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are in the business of helping people, but happen to specialize in treating hair loss. What I mean by that, is the patient always comes first, and we really go the extra mile for our patients. All of our patients, both male or female, suffer from some type of hair loss and we have many treatment options that can help and can really be life-altering for our patients.
While the majority of our patients have genetic hair loss, we also have patients that experience hair loss from radiation therapy or a traumatic accident, and it is great when we are able to help them. DiStefano Hair Restoration is also known for our specialized IGT (individual graft procedure) procedure, which is a process where we remove grafts one at a time.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
It is hard to have dislikes for Boston. Maybe the winters are a little long, but that is what builds character in the city. Boston has so much to offer and this is reflected in its people, from its history to the universities, food, sports, and entertainment. It really is a great location for our practice.
There is not another place we would rather be.
