Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Cohenno.
Mark, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As the founder of National EMS Institute, I had passion for Emergency Medicine from an early age. I had grown up with my mother who is heavily involved at a local hospital and my father was an entrepreneur. This was the seed of my drive to make both of my worlds collide.
After working as an Emergency Medical Technician myself, I saw the flaws in the training of EMTs and I wanted to provide a better, faster, and more hands on experience for those interested in this profession. Generally, training courses took nearly 6 months to complete and seemed to be mainly lecture based. My vision was different. I developed courses that were accelerated and filled with simulations to spark student interest and retention. Some of the simulations we offer include a mock hospital room, one bedroom apartment, crash simulation lab, and we even have 2 training ambulances on site.
16 years later, National EMS Institute has grown to have 7 area locations, a robust online course, CPR training, and even a uniform store. We are New England’s Largest EMT Training Institute and each year we continue to build on that legacy.
Has it been a smooth road?
Overall, I would say yes it has been a fairly smooth ride. Every entrepreneur has a few struggles along the way, but if you persist and your passion outweighs your doubts, anything is possible. One of our biggest obstacles to overcome was trying to find financing. As a young entrepreneur, starting a business at 18 years old, there were not any businesses willing to back the company. I am now proud to say that as a company, we have never taken a loan from an investor or a bank. Giving the company complete financial freedom and control.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
National EMS Institute specializes in accelerated EMT Training. Our courses run anywhere from 15 days to 8 weeks long. We have a staff of dedicated employees that make this all possible. From the training staff to the billing department, to advertising and enrollment. Everyone works together to allow National EMS Institute to flourish and grow and serve students to the best of our ability.
We are known for our immersive training simulations and the shear speed of our courses. Very few people in the country are running EMT courses at the rate of National EMS Institute. But I would have to say that my favorite aspect of the company is the hands on practicals. Our Instructors go above and beyond to make these simulations realistic. They dress up in costume, molage their faces and wounds, use props, and act out injuries so students will know exactly what to expect when working in the field.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Boston and the surrounding towns are a great place to start a new business or expand a current one. The prestigious colleges in the area create an educational mecca that gives businesses access to millions of great minds.

Thank you so much for publishing his story! It is great to hear success stories in business, especially in the EMS field where there are so many who embark on this journey and never quite follow through. I am so overwhelmed with joy that I get to work with him everyday!
