Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Barry
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
With the Sunday comics in the Worcester Telegram and The Globe as my museums, I’ve always been one for drawing, making pictures. I drew as a child, during school class time, in the military (on bombs), eventually finding myself in art school, Swain School of Design, now part of UMass Dartmouth. At Swain I learned the fundamentals of draftsmenship, printmaking, design and painting. Now many years later and many museum visits around the world, the pursuit of making the best work I can possibly make continues, every day.
Please tell us about your art.
I paint the seemingly ordinary moments of life that aren’t ordinary at all. In a world that often seems to be twisting, turning and chaotic, to capture just a second in time or a fleeting glimpse of motion in a painting allows for a semblance of stability. Figures in a landscape, working in a garden, sailing a boat or an interior scene of a family at dinner, in each painting I try to make the connections between the human forms and the environment. Whether it be through emphatic use of color or line, the exaggeration of an arm, a facial expression or a gently curving road, guiding a cyclist through a country landscape, each element of a painting is pared to its simplest form needed to compose a contemporary vignette.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
Social media is an excellent way to connect, especially Instagram. Its image driven and followed by many artists, gallerists, curators and museum staff. Personal contact is still the most important, get out there, make the gallery rounds, openings and lectures.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I have been fortunate to be included in numerous exhibitions throughout the U.S., This Summer my work can be seen at The Hall Art Foundation, in Reading, Vermont. In a show titled “Made in Vermont”. Also markbarry.blogspot.com which has links to other sites featuring my work.
