Today we’d like to introduce you to Marilyn Taylor.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Marilyn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 1990, after a very fulfilling career as a Childbirth Educator and Doula, I took myself back to school and became a Licensed Massage Therapist. At the time, I was the first licensed massage therapist in Southboro and had a very full practice in between raising my children and continuing to offer health and education services to pregnant inmates at the Framingham Women’s Prison. It was an eye-opening and very humbling experience to witness their lives and their stories.
As my massage practice evolved, I said good-bye to MCI-Framingham and became very immersed in the field of mind, body, spirit well-being. Like many other professions which create a quiet, reflective space for their clients, I found that people wanted to process, discover, review where they were at in their life and take steps to create a life that was more meaningful, aligned with their values and priorities, had a spiritual foundation and good dose of joy and pleasure. I did have a degree in Psychology and Education but never really wanted to be a therapist. Lucky for me the field of Personal Coaching was becoming very high profile and I felt I was being called to make this my next career move. In 2000 I became a certified life and wellness coach and right up to this very moment I have loved this field where partnering with my clients gives them the tools, skills and strategies to move into a more dynamic connection with how they show up in the world.
I believe that we are at a tipping point in our society. We are being challenged to reflect more deeply on how we care for ourselves, our families, our community and our world. There is a voice inside each of us that sometimes is heard as a whisper and other times a giant roar reminding us to slow down, take stock of the choices we are making and engage in actions that support our personal truth.
Coaching also gave me a deeper connection to my own creativity. I have had the privilege of creating numerous retreats, workshops, speaking engagements, mastermind groups and leading The Wellness Roundtable Holistic Practitioners Network. Great learning experiences for myself and participants through art, meditation, movement, dialogue, inquiry and more.
I also discovered that I enjoyed writing more than I ever realized and authored “10 Practices of Personal Sustainability. The Savvy Person’s Guide to Conscious Living,” and “Confident Directions Life Coaching Cards, empowering you to be Calm, Clear, Confident and Courageous.” Through regular blogging, I get to share my own life insights in the hope that others will take a closer look at their life experiences for greater insight.
Going forward I am currently working on several online programs based on coaching programs I have led. I am very excited to get those launched!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of my own personal priorities was to put my family at the top of the list. I have never regretted that especially during the time when my children were growing up. Over the last 10 years there have been challenges as my parents got older and needed more care and I also was blessed to have my sister Joan who had Downs Syndrome live with us during her final years. There were many stops and starts over this period when being with my family was more important to me than anything else. When I became a grandmother 8 years ago, I decided to be active in their lives as well, so that meant less time with my business. I had to just keep re-framing my expectations for what I wanted to accomplish and be realistic about my timeline. And yes, I did hit the wall more than once in figuring all of it out!
