Meet Maricruz Polito of Maricruz Hairstyles in Financial District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maricruz Polito.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
While working at a salon in Newbury St more than 10 years ago, there were two very specific situations that made me think about changing the course of my career to something I unexpectedly found out I loved…… doing people’s hair in their wedding day!

The first one…..it was a Saturday morning, we had a full schedule at the salon as most Saturdays, a young girl came in the door and burst up in tears, she announced to my boss whom also happened to attend the front desk that it was her wedding day and she had booked an appointment to get her done by the hairstylist she knew and work with for years that previously had a trial run with, but for reason she did not know he just never showed up to the salon to her appointment.

My boss called me and asked me to work with her, she was so disappointed and desperate at that time that the only thing she mentioned when I asked her what was that she wanted for her hairdo she said “I just want to be on time for my wedding please do what you think is best”. She had a very beautiful and elegant demeanor about her, I suggested a simple chignon. 30 minutes later she was on her way out the door with a large smile in her face and said to my boss “This hairdo is way better than what the other hairstylist tried before, God works in mysterious ways. Thank you”

The second one… was a regular client of mine at another salon I used to work located on Newbury St as well, she had been coming to me for years and she was getting married soon. She asked about the prices the salon had for onsite bridal parties, when the receptionist told her she almost got a heart attack as it was 3 times the regular salon price because it was onsite. She looked at me and said “I love your work and I would love you to do my hair, but my parents are paying for the wedding and they can’t afford what the salon charges in order for you to come to my house, I will not have time to come here otherwise I would do it” I have known her for such a long time and we have spoken about her wedding day so many times that it was heart breaking not be able to be part of her day, however, I understood both ends…. my boss was running a business and her parents were not in the position to pay that amount. I understood then as well….. It was time for me to change paths and go somewhere where I could follow what I loved to do and be able to make decisions of my own based on the specific situation and needs of each client.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think when you own a business small or large is never a smooth road! At least I have not met anyone yet that had it easy, not me for sure. Working with people in what is considered one of their most important days in their lives can be challenging, there are too many emotions involved, at times it can be difficult and I need to be composed, calm and professional no matter what the day can bring. Also being in my own at the beginning was very difficult as it takes time for people to trust your work and get to know you, it was challenging to earn the income necessary to maintain the business ad sustain life while building a name.

Thankfully I have a wonderful husband that supports my adventures and dreams his help has been imperative to achieve goals at work.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Maricruz Hairstyles story. Tell us more about the business.
My specialty is Onsite Bridal Hair Design, my business is one on one oriented the bride will speak with the same person from beginning to end, from the moment she calls or emails to inquire about availability and pricing all the way through the hairstyle she will be sporting walking down the aisle… she is always working with me.

I offer a wide variety of styles, from simplistic elegance to intricate and bohemian, each bride is different and has a different vision for her day, and each detail is custom made to what the feel of the wedding is.

In the trial run I offer 3 different hairstyles ideas or more, in the wedding day my reliability, experience and professionalism sets me apart.

I like to place myself in the bride’s shoes and try to understand what the goal is, each woman wants her wedding to be the best, I like to be part of her excitement, try to alleviate concerns and help to achieve her vision.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think I make my own luck, consistency, reliability, hard work and most of all perseverance pays off. I consider myself a very lucky person for the talent I naturally was given, but talent is not enough talents must be polished, I have to keep learning and experiencing, meeting other professionals in my field as well as related fields, networking, marketing etc. I have to make it work and work to get what is necessary to sustain life and enjoy it while I am at it. When I win the Mega millions then that will be luck!!!!
