Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Ohanesian.
Marcus, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
First and foremost, I’m a musician (drummer) and have been since I was 7.
At this point in my life, I’ve done a little of everything inside the Music Industry (http://www.wearehonorroll.com) – Artist Manager, Tour Manager, Tour Merchandise Seller, Festival Organizer, Independent Music Promoter, Booking Agent, and more. Jack of most trades, master of none. 😉
I’m currently the talent buyer at Ralph’s Diner (http://www.ralphsrockdiner.com) in Worcester, MA. We’re a 200-capacity venue that has been around for over 30 years. I was booking shows independently at Ralph’s when I was offered the job to take over as the Events Manager.
I also do freelance branding and web design at Perfect Evolution (https://www.perfectevolution.xyz), which ties closely with online brand/artist marketing. I handle logo design, web design, and much more for small businesses, including the entertainment industry.
Has it been a smooth road?
Of course not. Any one that tells you otherwise is lying to you. If you’re not struggling, you aren’t working hard enough.
Organizing an outdoor music festival for 1 day a year is a lot harder than it sounds. Trying to confirm shows for a tour in new territories is very hard without contacts. Driving the overnight 2am to 6am shift in a blizzard was also a struggle.
However, if you don’t love it and enjoy the process and struggles, then don’t do it.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I manage the events calendar for Ralph’s Diner. We have all types of music from rock, blues, metal, hardcore, folk, indie, comedy, variety, poetry, etc.
We are probably best known for our eclectic decor and cheap delicious food/beer.
The diner, built in 1930 by the Worcester Lunch Car Company (the first to manufacture diners operating from 1906 to 1957) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The atmosphere is best described as eclectic. Antiques and neon adorn the walls and ceilings, and hand painted murals are everywhere, a sort of curated carnival of curiosities.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yeah, sure. Worcester has been developing a lot the past 10 years and keeps getting better with newer restaurants, bars, and community type of events.
