Meet Mara Iancovici of Mara Core Conditioning in Newton Highlands

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mara Iancovici.

Mara, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I hold B.A. in Physical Education, Sociology and Anthropology from Bar Ilan University in Israel. At the Wingate Institute in Israel, I studied therapeutic back exercises and volleyball coaching. Subsequently, I received a M.Ed. from Boston University. I am a certified personal trainer and a Stott Pilates instructor, I draw upon my 20 years of teaching experience and this strong background in exercise physiology and kinesiology to design the safest, most effective and inspiring programs for my clients My goal is to create the right blend of exercises and intensity so everyone can succeed and progress at their own level. By evaluating each person individually and analyzing their specific physical skills and limitations, I can tailor an exercise program around their personal needs and goals. The movements create muscle control which becomes integrated into their daily activities and their lives; the workout becomes a lifelong experience. In our society some people use their minds to become aware of their bodies, while others tend toward physical expression rather than words. True fitness is a balance of the mind, body and willpower. I shape my sessions to help develop my clients’ emotional and physical health through self-esteem and, in group settings, through teamwork. These personalized and progressive workouts aim to promote health and fitness for life, from the inside out, a whole body, mind and spirit experience.

Has it been a smooth road?
As a high school physical education teacher, volleyball coach, and fitness trainer, I began to specialize in corrective exercise. Corrective exercise became my springboard to Pilates and I successfully pursued certification in Stott Pilates. Now I blend my expertise in corrective exercise with Pilates. This was a natural progression and recently I have become certified in the Gyrotonic Expansion System, which increases range of motion, leads to greater joint stability, improved agility and athletic performance, and a deep internal strength. By combining these approaches, I help my clients improve their strength, core, flexibility, and balance. It is a struggle to focus on continually improving my teaching skills while running a profitable business. One particular I faced was the closing of the gym where I taught for ten years and had established a loyal following. I turned that challenge into an opportunity. This led me to open my own beautiful studio in Newton Highlands, a sunny, well-equipped space that my students love.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Mara Core Conditioning story. Tell us more about the business.
