Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Maushart.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up, my father had always emerged me in the arts. As he was an artist and gallery owner himself, I was always around art and art history. For me, it was a natural progression to the arts. I received my degrees in Interior Design and Art History and began to work in galleries.
I started at Axelle Fine Arts on Newbury Street in 2013. Mitch Plotkin, the Director, hired me as the fine art consultant. After developing significant relationships in Boston, when it came time to close Axelle, Mitch and I decided to continue Bertrand’s legacy here in the South End.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In the beginning, we struggled with our choice of location as our Newbury Street storefront had always been a big part of our brand. However, our choice to move to the South End was well accepted by our existing clients and has brought in a new client base in the process. As with any new business, there are road bumps along the way. But, Mitch and I have been fortunate enough to have supportive artists and clients throughout our transition process. Currently, we feel comfortable and confident in the South End and in our brand as M Fine Arts Galerie.
M Fine Arts Galerie – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Mitch and I started M Fine Arts after the passing of Bertrand Delacroix. Our gallery is dedicated to representing his legacy. He had a passion for exceptional and emerging contemporary artists. When Mitch and I first started M Fine Arts in 2016, we spoke of not only honoring the gallery that Bertrand had left, but expanding its vision to include more exceptional artists and works from around the world.
While working at Axelle, Mitch and I realized we had a mutual appreciation for Fine Artwork. And not just that, we had complementary skillsets which would equip us to become great partners in a business. While Mitch specializes in artist communications I focus on gallery tasks and business relations and we both work one on one with our clients.
At both our Newbury location and at our new location here in the South End, we have always put a spotlight on artists that are not represented anywhere else in the U.S. We mainly represent artists from France, and are always looking for artists that have a unique contemporary perspective to bring to the Boston art scene.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Easy. Success = finding something that makes you happy. Success is having a goal and being able to follow the steps towards achieving it. I don’t define success in a monetary way—to me success is more about passion.
