Meet Mackenzie Lee of Six Feet In Heels in North End

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mackenzie Lee.

Mackenzie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
For as long as I can remember I have always been in love with fashion! I studied finance in college, but tried really hard to break into the fashion/retail industry upon graduation. As it turned out, having a degree in finance and no prior retail experience, I was not the ideal candidate for that particular industry. So, about four years into my job in financial services, I was bored and needed something to get me going and bring some passion back into my life. I had been following some other bloggers, and thought to myself “why can’t I do that?” This was how Six Feet In Heels was born!

My main focus is on fashion, with a sprinkling of travel and lifestyle. When it comes to fashion, the one thing you will always find me talking about is making your closet work for you! As much as I love shopping and getting new pieces, the key to being consistently stylish is buying the right pieces. If you head to my blog, you will see that I give a lot of advice on how to do this!

Six Feet In Heels started as a place where I could do what I love. I could put together different looks, give fashion advice, and start building a visual portfolio through my website and Instagram. It has since then become so much more! I have met so many amazing people, and had some incredible experiences that I would have never otherwise had.

And for those of you wondering…I am not actually 6′ tall when wearing heels. I know, I know….I’m a fraud, and really more like 5′ 11″ in heels, but that just doesn’t have the same ring to it. When I was deciding what to name my blog, Six Feet In Heels just stuck, and I honestly view it as a mentality that emits confidence. When I wear heels out, I am often one of the taller people in the room, which is something that I love now, but that took some time to get used to (thank you awkward middle school and teen years). So, if I can put across an image and a brand that celebrates being tall and wearing heels with confidence, that is more than I could ever ask for! Here’s hoping I can continue to inspire people dress for themselves and do so confidently!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
With any new venture, there are bound to be some bumps on the road. Starting Six Feet In Heels has been one of the biggest learning experiences I have had to date, and is still something that consistently keeps me on my toes. Not only did I have to go through learning how to start my own website and building up a social following, but there is also this entire industry surrounding blogging and social media that is still so new and changing every day.

Another major struggle that I have had to learn to cope with is people’s perception of what I do. I think that there is a common misconception that what we do as bloggers, or influencers, is easy. That all we do is post pretty pictures of ourselves online. There is actually so much behind it that goes into creating everything for Six Feet In Heels. It can sometimes to be difficult have people judge you for doing something that you put so much effort into. I will say thought that I have been really lucky in the sense that our community here in Boston is amazing. The other people that do the same thing as me are all incredible individuals with such amazing stories to tell. They are honestly what keep me going sometimes!

Lastly, a big struggle can be just dealing with social media in general. Feeling like you need to be constantly connected can sometimes be bad for your mental health. I have learned in the years that I have been doing this, that sometimes breaks are necessary. If going on Instagram, or updating a new blog post, are things that feel like are too much for me at the time, I have realized that there is nothing wrong with taking a couple days to unplug. This way, when you come back, you are fresher and your content and perspective reflect that.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Six Feet In Heels – what should we know?
Six Feet In Heels is focused mainly on helping people to build a timeless wardrobe. Trends are ever changing, but if you build a wardrobe with classic, staple pieces you will always be in style. This is what my mom and grandma passed on to me, and what I try to pass on to others through what I share on Six Feet In Heels.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think that in order to be successful in this industry, you have to be consistent, authentic, and stick to the motto ‘quality over quantity’. While I am not always the best at being consistent (still working on this somewhat), I do pride myself on being authentic and focusing on producing quality material. I understand my style and what I like, so I never share things with my readers that I am not 100% behind!
