Today we’d like to introduce you to Mabel Clark.
Mabel, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Like with every Brazilian, my love for the traditional Brazilian desserts grew quickly as we are always around good food and Sunday lunches filled with meals and desserts. Growing up as a child as soon as I could learn to stir, I learned my family recipes and added my own twists of flavor. After moving to the US in 2015 from Brazil and coming from a family of exceptional cookers, I missed the tasty desserts of my homeland, especially my favorite which is called brigadeiro (bree-ga-day-row). I could not find any sweet that satisfied quite like a brigadeiro in the U.S., and the Brazilian brigadeiros I found in bakeries in all the Greater Boston Area were poor in quality and ingredients. That made me think about the wrong perception Americans and people of other cultures could have about what a good brigadeiro is, so with that, I knew I had to start Mabel Treats and share an authentic experience with them.
Has it been a smooth road?
There have been challenges along the way in getting my business started similar to what many young entrepreneurs commonly face. For me the easiest part was the creative aspect since cooking of the brigadeiros and experimenting with flavors is something I am passionate about and comes naturally to me. However, as soon as I started to make the brigadeiros the biggest challenge was to get the best ingredients with affordable prices as my brigadeiros are made only with high quality products and are free of preservatives, gluten, soy or egg. I kept searching for the best chocolate, the purest cacao, original chocolate sprinkles, and organic ingredients, and afterwards I made the best Brigadeiro of Massachusetts!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Mabel Treats – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Mabel Treats is a Boston based artisan brand where every sweet is handmade to order. We only use high quality, natural ingredients and we like to support local producers and do not use anything artificial. I, Mabel Bentes Clark, created Mabel Treats in 2017.
We make Brigadeiro – it is Brazil’s favorite and most traditional sweet. Made with condensed milk, cocoa and butter, its cooking process requires patience and love. The result is a delicious ball of chocolate fudge with a unique and unforgettable consistency, like a truffle but better. We also make brownies, cakes and cupcakes. We have a vegan line of brigadeiros, chocolate cake and brownies as well, what makes us different of our competitors. Our products are 100% artisanal and made with AMOR! We do catering, events and gifts. Our menu has more than 15 flavors, including cappuccino, strawberry, white chocolate, pistachio, Nutella, coconut, and some exotic ones like green tea, ginger and chili pepper.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Boston was the first city that came up on my mind when I decided to come to the U.S. to study Business English. I really love the multicultural atmosphere mixed with the very typical New England style architecture. As being a lover of good food, I’ve found in Boston many restaurants styles to enjoy. Also, the city gave me the gift to meet my Bostonian husband.
The only one thing that I don’t like in Boston is winter, giving that I came from a tropical climate country. However, the fall and winter seasons makes the chocolate and sweets much tastier in my opinion.
