Meet Lorin Rees of Rees Literary Agency

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorin Rees.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I awoke from a nap and decided to become a literary agent. This was in 2003. It’s the only epiphany of any significance I have ever experienced.

Why a literary agent?
Because all my life I was pursuing a career, an endeavor, that I could believe in, that I was passionate about, and that could have an impact on the world -something that got me dreaming. And there is no way you can be in this business if don’t love books, ideas, great writing.

Everyday is the opportunity to imagine great things and pursue projects that are inspiring. It’s a dreamers business. I work with wonderful, delightful people who are the best at what they do. This has helped me get where I am and it helps me to keep going.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Publishing, by definition, is not a smooth ride all the time. It’s very unpredictable. We’re all placing bets and trying to minimize our risks. Some things go your way, and other times, the tide turns. But this is what makes it so exciting and challenging. Nothing is a sure thing, yet anything is possible.

What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The Rees Literary Agency is one of the first agencies established in Boston that has thrived since 1983. We are a boutique agency, which is a poetic way of saying we’re small and work intimately with every author. Ann Collette specializes in literary, upscale commercial women’s, crime, upscale western, historical military and war, and horror. Her list includes the NY Times Bestseller The Art Forger by B.A. Shapiro.

Rebecca Podos focuses on Young Adult work. She is not only an agent, she is a published author. Her books The Mystery of Hollow Places and Like Water are published by Balzer+Bray/HarperCollins, with her third novel, Creatures Such as We, coming in 2019. Her list includes the NY Times Bestseller The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzie Lee.

I represent both literary fiction and inspiring, compelling non-fiction. I work with thought leaders who are advancing powerful ideas and award-winning fiction writers. My list includes You Can Stop Humming Now by Daniela Lamas, Changeable by Stuart Ablon PhD., The CEO Next Door (NY Times Bestseller) by Elena Bothelo and Kim Powell, You Know When the Men Are Gone by Siobhan Fallon (winner PEN USA) and Black River by S.M. Hulse (finalist PEN Hemmingway Award).

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Feeling inspired and energized on most days.
