Today we’d like to introduce you to Lori Haverty.
Lori, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Health and fitness have always been a huge part of my life. I graduated from Salem State College with a bachelor’s degree in health science and from there began to teach fitness classes. Growing up, I was always athletic so it was no surprise to my family and friends when I became a fitness instructor full time.
Growing up, my father coached pop warner football; I always wanted to part of the action and followed him around at practices and games. Even though he wasn’t coaching me, I saw the motivation and encouragement he gave his players and that unleashed confidence in me I never knew I needed at the time. After he passed, I began working out as an outlet to cope with the loss. I wanted to share my passion with the community that helped me get through some of my toughest times. I saw a great opportunity in the fitness market at the time and decided to go for it.
There is no better feeling than creating a place where other can go to escape their everyday lives and focus on them even it’s just for 45 minutes. I never thought so many lives would be changed and how many friendships would be formed by opening Tread. My story is far from over; I would say this is only the first part of the series.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
“If you find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere.”
To say, there were no challenges and obstacles opening three studios in three years would be a lie. To say, we let those challenges stop us would also be a lie. Letting go of control was probably the hardest for me, I am very hands-on with every aspect of tread, so finding balance between raising my child and following my passion was the first challenge I overcame. At the end of the day, my daughter is number one and everything else comes second. I wanted her to see me, even at 40 years old, work hard, follow my heart and succeed.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Tread story. Tell us more about the business.
My businesses, Tread, Tread on the Mill and Tread on East are fitness havens dedicated to health and personal empowerment. We aspire to motivate Tread members to feel fit, challenged and part of a close community. Tread certified instructors will inspire you to build strength and endurance all to the beat of the music. We will balance the essence of group fitness with personal victories and contagious movement.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I am a true believer that hard work puts you where good luck can find you. Throughout this journey opening Tread, I’ve learned positive thoughts create good outcomes. Yes, there have been days that have been worse than others but when I sit back and look at the big picture, the good days outweigh the bad. It is all about putting things in perspective when you’re a business owner. You simply cannot make everyone happy all the time and for me, that was hard to accept.
It was important for me to create a team of instructors who have that same love and passion for fitness as I do. They are hard working and truly keep the wheels turning in each studio. Their dedication goes beyond a great workout, they create lasting connections with each and every client.
