Today we’d like to introduce you to Lori Guertin.
Lori, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We purchased the Essex Street Inn over 16 years ago from Joseph Pearson. At that time we had 19 rooms between two buildings. They are three buildings on the property. Two of them were boarding house. After a year or so we decided to make one of the building part of the Inn. This increased our rooms from 19 to 28 rooms and suites. As demand increased we renovated the three building which added an additional 10 rooms and a conference room that accommodates up to 20 people. With adding the 10 rooms we are the largest Inn in downtown Newburyport.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There are always ups and downs with any business. We strive from the fact that the Essex Street Inn has a great reputation. That our guest enjoy staying with us. We also have great staff that cares about the property as much as we do!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Essex Street Inn – what should we know?
I am an owner. I take care of the operations part of the business. I meet with my managers. Help solutions to any issues that they need assistance. I also take care of the paperwork/bills for the property.
I am very proud of the staff we have and that are a company we like to give back to our veteran’s.
I think I am more hands on than some properties.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My husband plays a great role. He takes care of the repairs and is strong in the marketing department.
Its helps that we each bring our strong points to the property which makes the Essex Street Inn a great place to visit.
