Today we’d like to introduce you to Dimple Gandhi.
Dimple, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
YouTube. At its core, it is a simple platform that everyone seems to use these days.
Several years ago, I had no idea that one youtube video would help spark my passion for makeup and eventually lead me to start my own business as a freelance makeup artist.
Growing up I was rather tomboyish, I loved playing all types of sports and if you asked me what my favorite subjects were I would say art and English. Fast forward a couple of years later and I am the exact opposite of who I thought I was, as a student going for my doctorate in pharmacy and a makeup artist.
From an early age, I was constantly dancing at recitals and culture shows, this gave me the opportunity to practice my makeup artistry skills on myself, my peers, and on other performers. I became the official makeup artist for the dance academy I went to. Makeup became my identity. During my sophomore year of college I worked with Dana Farber Cancer Institute and used makeup as an outlet to help make cancer patients feel beautiful, and that is when I knew that I wanted to do this for the rest of my life.
When the time came to go to college, I gravitated towards pharmacy school- don’t ask why I still don’t know. I entered college totally unsure of what I was studying.
Unexpectedly (and fortunately) I fell in love with pharmacy, I find it absolutely fascinating to study how drugs affect the body. During my time at University, I have had the opportunity to work with Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research and Harvard University. I was able to have these experiences because of the wonderful city of Boston.
Initially, I spent a lot of time thinking about whether chemistry and medicine was my true passion or was it makeup? I came to the realization that both involve helping people, just in different ways. I don’t have to choose which I love more because I plan to graduate with my doctorate in pharmacy and create a career path in which I can blend pharmacy and makeup artistry together.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
You know what they say, no pain no gain. It has certainly not been an easy road. I think two of the biggest things that I’ve struggled with is my age and the time that I have practiced in this industry. I feel so lucky that I’ve truly found my passion and calling in life rather early on. However, being so young, people tend not to take me seriously. I’ve learned to use that as motivation to prove them wrong.
Additionally, since I’ve taken on pharmacy school, a lot of my time is devoted to studying and involvement on campus. As a result, I’ve had a hard time getting that wide range of experience needed in order to be a versatile makeup artist. Initially it was difficult to find time to do anything between my schoolwork, pharmacy job, social life and makeup gigs, however, the art of balance is something that I have been able to work on and get better at over time.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Look Your Absolute Best – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am a freelance makeup and nail artist. I hold seminars, one on one makeup classes and do makeup and nail services for special occasions, weddings, and bridal parties. The unique part of my business is that I am able to provide both makeup and nail services, this is rare because most makeup artists focus on only makeup.
My specialty is smokey eyes, I can do a smokey eye with just about any color, with intensities ranging from natural to dramatic and even ones that are appropriate for any type of look or occasion. Speaking from experience as a medical student who works three jobs, I know how expensive things can get, therefore I make sure that my services are priced to be very affordable for the average person. Being priced at a rate lower than what is competitive on the market has worked in my favor.
Look Your Absolute Best began in 2011 when I realized as a makeup artist my primary goal was to enhance my clients’ natural beauty and make them truly feel beautiful. I believe in education, I want my clients to be able to learn and recreate these types of looks for themselves at home. I have hosted several makeup seminars in the Boston area during which clients can come and learn how to create a certain kind of look. My goal as a makeup artist is to make my clients look and feel their absolute best.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
In the upcoming years, I plan to graduate with my doctorate in pharmacy. Once I do so, I aspire to blend my passion for makeup and science together and create a career that allows me to practice what I love. Whether that entails using my knowledge of chemistry in order to create my own cosmetic products or working for a pharmaceutical company while expanding my freelance business on the side.
