Meet Lizzie Johnson of Lizzie’s Bakery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lizzie Johnson.

Lizzie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always loved baking when I was in college! I would find recipes on Pinterest and try to make a new recipe every week. I came from a very conservative University where drinking was not allowed so instead I would throw a ton of dessert parties for everyone! It wasn’t till after college where I was working at a tech company doing social media was when I wanted to get into baking cakes.

Two weeks into baking cakes, I suddenly get laid off and now I’m unemployed trying to support my husband who was still in school. It was immediately after I got laid off, I said: “I want to start selling these cakes I make to friends and family!” That’s truly how Lizzie’s Bakery started. So getting laid off was truly a blessing.

Has it been a smooth road?
Oh, definitely not a smooth road at all! It’s been a bumpy, fun road though! Anyone who is trying to start a business will always have struggles. I would say my biggest struggle was always moving to a different state. After my husband graduated college, we moved from Utah to Los Angeles and then 4 months into living in Los Angeles, his work wanted to relocate us to Boston.

So we only lived in Los Angeles for one year and it made it really hard to network and establish long-term relationships with people in the industry because I knew I would be moving to Boston. Then I had the fear of moving to Boston because I knew not one soul! How am I supposed to bake cakes for people if they don’t even know I exist?

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Lizzie’s Bakery story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m a self-taught home baker based out of South Brookline/Chestnut Hill area. I make custom cakes and desserts that are unique, fun, and whimsical! What I love about Lizzie’s Bakery is that even though I’m a one-woman show, I think that’s what sets me apart from the big bakeries here in Boston.

When you inquire about a cake – you’re hearing from me and you know the cake that you are about to eat was made by ME with lots of love! I love being able to share behind the scenes of cake decorating on my Instagram stories or help other bakers out there who are starting out in the business. I love being able to talk with people whether it’s in person over a coffee date or on Instagram!

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think there will be a lot more self-taught bakers coming out into the world! Luckily Boston is not too saturated just yet with a ton of bakers! You can learn anything from watching a ton of YouTube videos!
