Meet Liz Fuller of Makeup Artistry in South Shore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Fuller.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Liz. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I used to be in high-tech PR for almost 10 years. It was an interesting, fast-paced industry, but I didn’t feel passionate about it. Technology was still new at that time, so the concepts were a bit difficult for me to fully understand. I also taught high school English. That was very rewarding and I really enjoyed teaching and helping the students do their best. Throughout this time, I was doing makeup for friends and family for various events. I had always loved makeup and just did this to help people out. I never charged any fees, and I didn’t even have a makeup kit. I would just say, “Go buy these products. These will work for you.” Finally my husband and friends asked why on earth I wasn’t doing makeup as a career. I never thought I could be a real makeup artist. But here I am.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. The first couple of years were very challenging. There was a lot of blood, sweat, and tears that went into creating and building my business. I built my own website, I went out searching for business, trying to get clients. My PR background served me well, because I knew how to find the right people to contact for my business needs, to get the word out that I was starting a makeup artistry business. I also had to build my makeup kit. Makeup is so expensive, so I had to buy the bare essentials to start off. That was very difficult because people come in all shades, so I lacked a full range of colors in the beginning.

Makeup Artistry, Inc. – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
As a makeup artist, I provide makeup application for every occasion. Whether it is a wedding, a head shot, a photo shoot, an ad campaign, TV and film, whatever occasion makeup is needed, I am the person to do it. For years, weddings were my bread and butter. Brides came to me specifically for natural-looking makeup. I am a conservative artist, I don’t believe that a person needs a heavy makeup application. That is what people are worried about. They think makeup artists will be heavy-handed and apply too much. And many do. But that is not how I work. It’s far easier to add more makeup if necessary than it is to take it away if you’ve applied too much. I think what sets me apart from others is that I listen and communicate with my clients. I ask clients many questions about themselves; their makeup experiences, their style, and their comfort level with makeup before I even touch their faces. I think it’s important to know how your client envisions themselves before I can put my vision into motion. My business has evolved over the last seven years. I am being asked for my expert advice in magazines, online news sites, and blogs. I have worked on ad campaigns and am currently working for an NBC sports channel as a makeup artist for two sports shows.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment is getting the job with NBC. It’s been a great learning experience for me. I get to work with men and women who love what they do, just as I love what I do. It’s incredible to have your work seen on TV. I feel a great sense of accomplishment, especially remembering how I started my journey and how it was a difficult road to get where I am now.
